Try "Language and input" in the settings menu.

Under "keyboard & input methods" press "default", then "set up input methods" on the pop up, followed by "Android keyboard" on the next page and lastly "Input languages"

There might me a shorter route but as its an area where you should only need to set the defaults, I never rally had chance to find one..

You are a life saver, thankyou :D

Its fairly close to what you've put up, mines slightly different, don't know why but its given me an option to manually delete the individual languages from the keyboard and then delete the button itself.

Thankyou so much, thats one very big annoyance gone :) many a time I've been puzzled why my keyboard changed lol

Ahh, I just found the "Suppress language switch key" option under "Advanced settings".

Don't think I can delete individual languages only deselect them

Anyway I use a custom ROM based on the US version of JB so that might account for some differences.

Anyone who wants to start getting geeky with Android could do worse than look up the guides at; http://forum.xda-developers.com/

Be warned though if your not careful you can brick your device, and believe me a mild sense of panic sets in when you think you have bricked a £300 tablet - thankfully after a very long and worried night I did manage to fix it.

But then a lot depends on your phone, on some you'd have to be a near complete idiot to kill it, but with others you might just make the wrong small mistake.

I did it on my old phone but my new one is a bit more advanced and it work's fine at the moment, so don't really want to mess with it, even though I could fix it.

Old phone - HTC Wildfire
New phone - Sony Xperia S

So there's a bit of difference. The Wildfire refused to update to the official Froyo. But I've got ICS on the Xperia so can wait a bit longer and hope Sony release JB for it.

I got quite lucky picking the desire, seems very well supported (by the XDA guys that is! Definitely not HTC) considering it's age.
Those with HTC devices may need to S-OFF to permanently change system files (like /etc/hosts if you want custom adblocking and I'm guessing SSH)

I rooted mine because I wanted to try something different (same reason I first tried Linux on the desktop) but now it's handy because the desire won't be getting past gingerbread officially but thanks to rooting and xda I've got a jelly bean rom :D
