Masabi have released an app for NFC-enabled Android phones.

From Masabi's website

Masabi, a developer of mTicketing technology for the transport sector, today unveiled a proof-of-concept Android application called ‘Smart Card Buddy Beta’ that is capable of reading and displaying the contents of ITSO-based transport ticketing smart cards.

......

The Smart Card Buddy Beta app can be downloaded on NFC handsets from the Google Play Marketplace.

It only reads the card number and any ticket numbers at the moment, but hopefully live apps should enable ITSO card loading from smartphones.

Wonder whether it can recognise an oyster card at all?

Anyone know the technical details here? Would it be possible to write data aswell as read? If so it could be an interesting way of buying tickets. Buy using an app on your phone and then tap your smartcard to your phone to put the "ticket" on your phone. Granted we could just get rid of the card all together and use the phone, but smartcards have several positives over phones (namely that the battery doesn't die!).
