An excess of rail?

Hey guys, when I'm on a train, on most linesides I see a significant amount of rail next to the tracks, is this old rail, new rail, or spare rail?

Could be any or all of the three... It's a remarkably convenient place to store hundreds of yards of metal.

Dropped for upcoming rail renewals basically, with the scrap price of metal still high, a mass 'clearance' of old dumped rail could raise a few quid for NR?:roll:

Unless scarp prices get towards £50,000 per tonne it wouldnt be cost effective for Network Rail to go around picking up the scrap rail...

If it reached that price there wouldn't be any rail around to run the trains on to pick up the scrap rail.

Talking about Lichfield when was the last train to use the chord onto the high level track?

Pendolinos are dragged that way when they head to Bombardier's plant for maintenance. Other than that, it is just freight (the Lichfield–Burton line is freight-only itself, excepting the occasional nonstop diverted XC service).

Where do Pendolino's get serviced? Do you mean Virgin's voyager depot at Central Rivers?

I can confirm that, dropped for rerailling and relays, scrap recovery is planned in but for various reasons it doesn't always immediately follow rerailling.
