For a long time the Penzance sleeper had a WTT departure time from Paddn of 0005 although the public time was brought back to 0002 and then 2359. The last change was to avoid passengers booking and turning up for the train on the wrong night!

When I was at Paddn (1979-1986), the Penzance sleeper was referred to by staff as "The Big Sleeper", a title that was transferred from the 0055 of earlier days that was sleeper only.

Interesting, and can imagine the confusion that 0005 caused to bring a change to 2359 for the sleeper.

Indeed. No chance of finding something for "the midnight train to Georgia" ;)
"

This came up in conversation after 11 hours of soldering the other day when the song came on the radio, the other people could not have been less interested if they tried. Clearly they don't like the railway as much as me.

On occasions when the Up sleeper starts from Plymouth due to Cornish engineering work, it generally starts at 0030. Given the way schedules are maintained / managed in railway planning systems, this results in two up Sleepers operating (i.e. departing from origin) on the same day. Great care must be taken to ensure the booking systems don't confuse the two. It has happened!

"the midnight oh-five"

You also get "double oh oh-five". I forget which one the standard dystopian future autoannouncer woman does.

I know that Amey / Celia Drummond / Phil Sayer all say "midnight oh five". I havent heard any of the other automated announcements announce any trains after 00:00 so perhaps its some of the Atos ones that say "double oh five".

If Cardiff legend Dave Edmunds can be a bit elastic with his timings, he can catch the 0004 from Cardiff Central to Swansea.

He announced his retirement from performing a few weeks ago, so he can use his bus pass to get to the Central free of charge, and then by using his Senior Railcard, can get a third off the price of his train ticket.

Let me know if you're aware of any other rock stars who need help with their transport planning.
