Something that I was initially going to do in September of last year (with a certain Administrator of a certain Internet forum), and now something I am somewhat ambitiously hoping to undertake on an 8-in-15 basis starting this coming Saturday, the 19th. I will be generally alternating the days I travel on, i.e. one on, one off, but with a couple of exceptions (for example Tuesday 29th may not be possible). And the whole thing will hopefully culminate in victory in the NWM Challenge, for which travel will be free as far as Cheltenham/Worcester!

Anyway, a few things I would like to add and ask. Before I start the questions though, three quick points:

(1) If anyone is wondering whether 8-in-15 is really worthwhile on a geographical basis, consider this: With a Railcard, it is only £16.50 more than a 3-in-7. I'm sure that I'm not the only one on here who wouldn't mind five days' almost-unlimited travel across an area of several thousand square miles for just £3.30 per day!

(2) If anyone is wondering how I can manage it around Uni, think back to February when I was constantly complaining about depression. It has improved, but not enough for me to be reasonably expected to attend every day. The welfare lady, who knows all-too-well that travelling is one of the best ways for me personally to become more cheerful has even suggested that I embark on an adventure!

(3) This will get me off my Nintendo DS for a while, I suppose!

Question Time then...

i. For the attention of those who have undertaken FoSWs before now: What was the experience like, and how did you plan each day? Did you only do a set amount each day, or did you go by area?

ii. Also for the attention of FoSW veterans: Are there any B&Bs in Cornwall that you feel may be worth a shout (so that I don't need to trudge down there several times just to fill in one final branch...)?

iii. If something goes horribly wrong, such as a fire at Plymouth grounding all traffic west of Newton Abbot to a halt, what compensation procedures are there? In my opinion £62.70 is excellent anyway, but knowing this might be useful; after all, less than £62.70 would thereotically be better-than-excellent!

iv. Should I worry about not being able to cover Okehampton, or are the Steam Railway running anything at the moment? I know I will have to pay, but I haven't travelled by steam since 2006. On the other hand, an Exeter to Okehampton return is only £3.30, which could be done during the summer (that is equivalent to each extra day compared to the 3-in-7 though!).

v. Are any guards likely to give me a hard time if I attempt to use the time-related easements on selected routes, such as the 0827 from Swindon to Penzance (0857 at Bath Spa)?

vi. Is there a better option for traversing the North Cotswold Line than a £10.10 CDR? A CDR would be adequate, because I'm not exactly going to get to Worcester before then if its restrictions are roughly identical to those of the FoSW...

vii. The seventh day will be my birthday, so I want to go for something special. Any suggestions? (Please do not say any of "The Valleys", "Severn Beach", "Exmouth", "Paignton", "Barnstaple" or "Newquay", or anything associated with any of those; five of those involve Pacers which I would like to avoid on the 31st as a minor treat, whilst the other is to a seaside resort which I am not particularly fond of.)

viii. Would people get bored if I provided a daily "blog", along the lines of my Great Escape and West Wales examples, or would eight such articles be reasonable? If practical, I will be writing live, as with the Great Escape article - albeit to a lesser degree, and not to the same length either.

ix. If I fail to cover every inch of line in the area (barring Okehampton), would it be considered a failure? Bear in mind that I have never been on a train beyond Newton Abbot, apart from a return from Liskeard to St Ives when I was on holiday aged 17.

x. Are there any major engineering works during the latter half of this month, besides the continued weekend closures around Tiverton Parkway? I have checked on National Rail Enquiries, but there does not seem to be anything that can be easily avoided through careful planning.

xi. Would 4,000 miles be a reasonable target?

xii. Can the FoSW be used on the Night Riviera, or is local travel forbidden (as with Reading to/from Paddington)?

xiii. Is there anything in particular I should watch out for? In particular, am I likely to claim any loco or XC HST mileage?

xiv. Is it worth attempting to travel to the Scilly Isles? The cheapest I have found is £35 - and then it would involve a miraculous 11:30 arrival on St Mary's. On the other hand, is it worth *not* attempting to travel to the Isle of Wight; should I be looking at travelling from both Portsmouth and Lymington, or just one of the two? And presumably Southampton would not be worth the trouble, given it would be easier to cover Cowes by bus (bus 1 to Cowes; bus 4 from East Cowes)?

If there is anything else people would like to add, please do. Every little helps (as a certain damned supermarket would claim). Also, be aware that I am looking at starting rather slowly (in terms of FoSW mileage), as I am going to attempt to cover the Valley network on the first day; after that, I will probably be trudging up-and-down the Severn Beach Line.

Much obliged, and I hope to see some of you on the way perhaps! I will need to run this past the Uni first though, because I'm not sure what they will make of me spending upwards of £60 on travelling when I'm looking at not having enough money to get to the end of April and thus "milking" off of them... (They'll probably just say the same as always: "You can't put a price on wellbeing." Especially at an effective cost of less than £8 a day.)
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Notice (craftily added as a new post to bring this thread back to the front line): It would appear that the Uni have, as expected, given their backing to the scheme. After all, this costs less than two day bus tickets in Bath, so to be able to cover Malvern to Penzance on eight different days is quite something!

It is very good value. I did a FOSW in 2005 and I originally needed it for two job interviews, one in Truro and one in Fleet (FOSW to Soton/Salisbury), seven days apart. I ended up deciding to do a FOSW for the reason you described.

EDIT: Just had a look at my old ticket. It cost £62.70 back then! Has it not increased in price at all over 6 years? Amazing if true.

People working at Student Welfare tend to be more sympathetic than others as they see people with all sorts of problems everyday. One staff at my uni told one of my students last term, who is apparently suffering from stress that she would miss her sister's wedding due to the January exams, that it would be best for her to go to the wedding and submit a mitigating circumstances form for the exam.

i. For the attention of those who have undertaken FoSWs before now: What was the experience like, and how did you plan each day? Did you only do a set amount each day, or did you go by area?

When I did mine, the emphasis wasn't on bashing so I did it at more of a leisurely pace. Apart from the two interview days, I did these ones below:

Day 1 - Saturday Cornish branch lines and back on the Night Riviera (living in Exeter then) - didn't experience any problem tho for the record.
Day 2 - Sunday Off preparing for interview.
Day 3 - Monday Interview in Fleet.
Day 4 - Tuesday Spent one day going up to Bristol, Gloucester, then to Cardiff, had a look around, back via the Severn Tunnel, and down the line to Weymouth - spent a night with a school friend there.
Day 5 - Wednesday (Non Rail Day) Had a stroll around Weymouth, had lunch with friend and came back on the X53, stopping along at Lyme Regis, and back home to Exeter. Mind you it was summer so the scenery was stunning. If the weather's good next few days then it might well be worth a visit to the Jurassic Coast on top of the X53. A very nice 5 hours from Exeter to Poole indeed.
Day 6 - Thursday Out to Barnstaple, bus all the way to Bideford - Oakhampton - Tavistock - Plymouth. Then went to both Paighton and Exmouth, crossing on the ferry over River Exe.
Day 7 - Friday Off.
Day 8 - Saturday Out to Salisbury then down to Lymington Pier, over to IOW and back via Portsmouth and Westbury.
Day 9 - Sunday Off preparing for interview.
Day 10 - Monday Interview in Truro.
Day 11 - Tuesday Missed my stop at Westbury so ended up at Pewsey. Took a bus to Swindon, stopping at Avebury stone circle, then up to Glouccester via Stroud, then down to Bristol and visited Severn Beach, did some shopping at Bristol city centre and came back.
Day 12/13/14/15 I was ill so wasted the last day of validity. I planned to do the journey along the boundary of validity to see how much I could take in. I moved away after a few months so haven't managed to do that even now.

vii. The seventh day will be my birthday, so I want to go for something special. Any suggestions?

I would say if the weather's nice, go down to Poole via Dorchester, then take the X53 (2-hourly) along the coast. You can either bail out at Lyme Regis and change onto the 31 (hourly) to get back on the tracks at Axminster, or go all the way to Weymouth. An Explorer costs £6.50. Depending on timing you can then possibly catch an XC HST back from Exeter to Bristol.

viii. Would people get bored if I provided a daily "blog", along the lines of my Great Escape and West Wales examples, or would eight such articles be reasonable? If practical, I will be writing live, as with the Great Escape article - albeit to a lesser degree, and not to the same length either.

Yes please. It would be interesting to hear how you get on, especially how you plan to cover 4000 miles in 8 days.:roll:

ix. If I fail to cover every inch of line in the area (barring Okehampton), would it be considered a failure? Bear in mind that I have never been on a train beyond Newton Abbot, apart from a return from Liskeard to St Ives when I was on holiday aged 17.

Why would it be a failure? It is supposed to help you relax not to stress you out. I hope you're not seeing it as some sort of contest (with yourself).

xi. Would 4,000 miles be a reasonable target?

That would be very impressive.

xii. Can the FoSW be used on the Night Riviera, or is local travel forbidden (as with Reading to/from Paddington)?

See above. I didn't experience any problem with the guard, but that was back in 2005.

xiv. Is it worth attempting to travel to the Scilly Isles?

On a day return I would say that you'll be pushed for time. If you plan to arrange for B&B then it is different.

Going one way via Portsmouth and the other via Lymington is definitely more fun. I wouldn't bother with Southampton. It's a hole anyway.

If you're in charge of the welfare department, would you rather see students having their problems sorted asap or using up more and more of the precious resources that your department has? It's a no-brainer. Enjoy your trip. I for one look forward to your journey diary. :D

Thank you for the reply; I was beginning to think that no-one cared

I have looked into your idea for the 31st, which seems quite attractive given I would have to pay precisely nothing for the bus, but in practice I would rather leave that until summer (and a very long bus journey to Bournemouth, via Warminster and Salisbury), and concentrate on visiting new areas specifically be train for the moment. So I have decided that I am going to cross the Solent to Ryde and Shanklin, for a little something whilst there, and then go back for a more serious IoW jaunt later in the spring.

Elsewhere, I am not looking at 4,000 miles, so don't worry about that. Even I thought that was quite optimistic, but the total that I have reached - 3,093 - is still rather substantial. I do aim to have a proper look around the likes of Penzance, Truro, Penzance, Paignton and others; essentially anywhere I have never been to before plus select others (bearing in mind that if allowing for car journeys I have been virtually everywhere on this ticket!).

Wightlink does Portsmouth Hbr - Ryde, Portsmouth Gunwharf - Fishbourne and Lymington - Yarmouth and have some decent fares. Yarmouth can be reached using Southern Vectis Route 7 which runs from Newport. Definitely a must if you have not done it before.

Rail journey into Cornwall is also a must during daylight hours purely for the views.

I reckon 4,000 miles in 8 days on a FoSW *is* doable. In August 2008 I did about 550 miles in one day within the FoSW boundaries, and 550 multiplied by8 equals 4,400. However, you'd have to be doing very well to manage that sort of target. If I remember, later I'll have a look and see if, should one be that interested in such a motive, if it's reasonably doable.

If you didn't cover everything, it wouldn't be a failure, although I can understand the reasoning behind that way of thinking. I was the same with the Lancashire Day Ranger I did in February. Just don't be too ambitious and have a back-up plan/arm yourself with timetables in case something does go wrong.

No gen on B&Bs I'm afraid, I've never stayed in one down there. The Night Riviera, you should have no problems using it from Taunton to Penzance and vice-versa. I never have and nor has anyone else I know who has used the service between any two points beyond/before Taunton.

The blog thing would be cool, I enjoyed your previous write-ups so would be quite keen to see how you get on. As for suggestions for your birthday day, well if it was me I'd spend the day with the emphasis on mileage so I'm not the best person to ask about that

The key thing to remember is that this is *your* trip, so do it as you see fit. Visit where you want, travel on what you want, make it a most enjoyable trip.

Hi Ivo!
what compensation procedures are there?
In this thread, rail-britain describes his experiences of making Passenger Charter claims following delays when using his All-Line Rail Rover.

Are any guards likely to give me a hard time if I attempt to use the time-related easements
When I'm travelling with a ticket where the restrictions or easements are not straightforward, I carry a print-out of them with me on the journey. I've not needed to show one yet, but it makes me feel more confident.

Would people get bored if I provided a daily "blog"
I look forward to reading your blog.

Do enjoy your rover!

you can use your FoSW on the up sleeper (or any local journeys on it), you can visit Exmouth or Paignton without bouncing on a bus, there are quite a few 150 diagrams and even more 14x + 153 diagrams wher you could travel in the 153!

either way, enjoy!

I don't want to do this without my camera, and I still haven't found the charger/USB! I fear that I may have left it on an LM 350 on my 1st Class GRE last month :( Also, I haven't had final clearance from my Uni yet (should have been today but the appointment I had was cancelled at short notice), so it looks like I may have to delay for a week. And if so, that means a right shake-up of the plans, because the plans for the 26th of March and 2nd of April (especially the latter, I've already bought an Advance from Brum in the evening!) are non-negotiable. Also, that would mean that any Riviera usage - which as yet is not accounted for, although total network coverage is - would need to be revised to the 9th of April, which would become the new last day.

Would it be worth obtaining a "Dongle" for this, or is the Internet connection around Cornwall and Devon too poor? I remember trying on my Anglia Plus in May, and it was pretty much useless outside of Norwich (the only large place I had some spare time in that didn't involve feeling peckish).

I'd imagine that it's not gonna be the end of the world. Should be cheap enough from Amazon market place or ebay.

OK; just a little update for everyone.

I've had sleeping problems again of late, so this is on hold for now. I will definitely do the Yeovil diversion next weekend though, and then NWM the following Saturday. I feel that this may be revised to commence on the 9th of April.

And now I have to mess around for NWM, unless I start the FOSW that day (i.e. a week earlier than suggested above). Grr...
