Hello All,

got a small gallery on my day 1 visit to Amsterdam Schiphol, arrived there in the evening, but as Runway 27 was in use, I spent a bit of time there getting shot's by the runway

Nice shots there, thanks! Do you know if the terrace at Schipol is fully open again?

Not fully open no, the usual terrace by the Wings restaurant is open but the other bit is still closed off. When I asked them on their Facebook page, they said it will never re-open

Nice pictures.

Unfortunately airport terraces are becoming rare and in many cases now require you to pass through security to access - no idea why, no-one is going to stand on a terrace to shoot down a plane when they could do so easily from outside the airport...

The smaller Schiphol terrace is still pretty good provided you have a good long lens.

Ah that's a shame, I used to love going there in the 1990s/2000s. It's better than nothing though like at most UK airports!

Indeed!

Not only that, the place where those pictures are isn't surrounded by high fence and barbed wire! It's a waist height fence, and the path is higher than the fence anyway so it's an un-obstructive view.

One place I went to, which I'll post on here when I get to it, is by a taxi-way, and you are so close to the taxiway it's unreal, as there is no fence at all, just a little river acting as a boundary, and when a 747 taxi's by, you are so close to the wingtip it's unbelievable!

No way would a view like that be possible at Heathrow!

It used to be, prior to Dawson's Field.

I am just old enough to remember when all that was protecting the north side of Heathrow was a wooden knee rail fence; in those days also the perimeter was rather closer to the runway than it is now. It used to be possible to just stop along the perimeter road and watch and photograph the aircraft from there with nobody batting an eyelid.

Somewhere deep in my parents' photo albums is a picture of me as a little kid there with a BOAC 747 behind me.

After Dawson's Field the first perimeter fence as we know it was very quickly erected; over the years it was reinforced and the perimeter moved back outwards away from the runway. What is now the Northern Perimeter Road West is right up to the perimeter fence; in the 1970s the fence was probably half as far from the runway as it is now.
