Not strictly preservation, but a potential and bold reopening nonetheless

Interestingly, Ecclesbourne are generally supportive, though surprised at the optimistic time and cost estimates but see potential for a four railway weekend...Matlock, Wirksworth, Butterly and Ripley. Sounds good to me.

By the time they're up and running, I assume there might be some spare 142s etc...haha

It's no great surprise that the MR-B have distanced themselves from this project - unfortunately they've just had their reputation tarnished by association through no fault of their own.

Why dont these people actually try to find out if their ideas are feasible and realistic before they go and talk to the press, and perhaps consider that their own past might make them unsuitable to front such a project? Its hardly rocket science.

Ha, what nonsense. You make it sound as though the two chaps went out to specifically seek a sex offender as a key part of a bizarre plan. I don't think socialising with such a person (probably without even knowing it) is sufficient reason to forever bar anyone from taking part in any community project...

As much as I think that this scheme was far, far too ambitious in its original form, I'm sure that a much simplified reopening as far as Denby only might have had some mileage, and let's not distract ourselves from that because of one person's less than delightful background.

Some salient points to consider. I've come across Des in the past and there's no love lost between him and plenty of my mates.

But the way this has been handled is extremely unfair.

If he did what he was jailed for it was very wrong indeed.

However the law of the land holds that he has served his time for that offence and it doesn't necessarily mean he's automatically at it again because he's decided to start again elsewhere.

His mistake in this matter was simply daring to upset the influential NIMBYs of your area, hence the subsequent mudslinging. There is no way otherwise that a £400 fine in a Belfast courtroom would make it on to the front page of East Midlands local newspapers, or that anyone would become aware of it at all, mostly likely.

The manner in which you post gives away the fact that you're annoyed at the railway proposal and are using this bloke's past as a manner of planning to deal with it.

I also think you are misguided in placing any blame regarding the matter with the two local lads, who have done nothing wrong at all, apart from proposing something that you happen to disagree with.

Take it from someone who practically has a busyish railway line through his back garden.

Whether the railway plan is actually any good is of course another matter.

Once again the whole thing stinks of a set up from Concerned of Ripley and Denby.

Keep your personal vendetta against Daniel to your village halls and whatever because very few people seem to be remotely interested, particularly on the internet.

If the police/authorities were unaware of what was occurring with Des, why should any one else have been. He wanted assistance to work on his project from what he thought was a genuine business who provided evidence of past projects that were claimed to have been worked on. He didn't think 'Oh yes, a random sex offender is the final ingredient I need to make this take off'.

As for moving your targets onto the MRC, just get a life fella, no one is listening. They aren't the first people this guy has tried it on with and probably won't be the last.

Go and persue your personal vendetta elsewhere mate, this is a railway forum. This individuals past - however abhorent - is not the reason why this scheme is fatally flawed, quite frankly there's not a hope in hell of it ever happening.

As I live by choice in the UK I abide by the laws of the land which give that:

Apart from this small fine received for a different offence, McKinley has done his time for his crime and is accounted to have paid his debt to society.

Daniel isn't my beloved. I just find your continued waffling bizarre. The Belfast Sunday Life article is nothing short of terrible sensationalist journalism, with (for once) the Echo/Heanor and Ripley versions being slightly more balanced and sensible.

Again I shall say that if the Police and Courts cannot keep track of someone, how do you expect a small business/charity in the form of MRC and a teenager in the form of Daniel to be able to dig up something they are determined to keep concealed about their past.

If it was that easy it wouldn't have got that far in the first place.

Again I will say that from what I've seen, it's only you and a select group of others that are blowing this out of all proportion and most people seem not to care. Keep your dislike of the railway project to it's core matter, and refrain from the personal attacks which just give you no sense of credibility.

I shall say again, for the final time, that had Desmond McKinley not been involved in a railway project that you seem to have got extremely hot under the collar about in your average little area, you would never have known about him being fined in Belfast, regardless of all the other things that occurred which you mainly wish to use against the railway project rather than the person.

I certainly won't be taking my kids to Butterley again!

Best not take them to the supermarket or local shop either then, as I'm pretty sure such businesses don't carry out CRB checks on every member of staff.

I see no reason why the MR-B should be involved in any investigation - they stated publically in a press release several weeks ago that this project was nothing to do with them. I've not seen any reference to the guy involved being a volunteer there which brought him into contact with children.

denbyist - if you have a problem with Midland Railway Butterley please contact them directly. If you want a police investigation, contact the police directly. But please don't reproduce stuff like that here. I have removed your posts, bar the original link to the news story, people can of course click that link, read the story and be informed about it. But no need for that other stuff. Please.

Amber Valley have a good grip on railway affairs. They have two heritage lines in their area and another nearby. Plus they, along with Derbyshire Council, are strong supporters of the Matlock branch. And they have an interest in the industrial history of the area which goes back to the eighteenth century.

If they are unenthusiastic, you can bet there's good reason.
