Not so - "independents" do stand for the US presidential, though because of varying rules in different states they aren't always on the ballot nationwide. There's a whole horde of them linked below just for 2016:

They have no hope of winning but can deny victory to someone else. Most famously if Ralph Nader handn't split the Democratic vote in 2000 then Gore would have won comfortably instead of Bush winning (or not winning according to your point of view) by a few hundred disputed votes in Florida. And I venture to say that if that had happened, the world today would be a much less dire place.

Javid, whilst pretty lacklustre in his response to Grenfell, is one of the more competent members of the cabinet and so he's something of a safe pair of hands

The fact that Javid- the walking embodiment of mediocrity- is seen as one of the more competent members of the cabinet sums this Government up perfectly.

Personally, I think May has been cynical. "He's from Pakistani heritage, how can he be racist?" as he carries on the same vile policies that May demands.

Speaking of Theresa May, is she OK? I'm worried about her health. She's been awfully quiet these last couple of weeks, we've had neither sight nor sound of her.

She was visiting a school in Sale yesterday, merrily dodging questions from the local press about whether she should resign re. Windrush issues.

In my eyes racism can be found all over the world. Here it is more a question that Rudd was a remainer on the Brexit. I mean; Rudd was not to blaim for the Windrush thing. Javid was a remain, but is now for leaving the EU.

I think Rudd going was more a matter of "what did she know and when did she know it" about the existence of immigration targets, suggesting she was either not on top of her job or covering something up. Windrush seems to have been more during May's tenure at the Home Office and was only an indirect contributor in that it caused the question of targets to be raised.

But the media here yesterday was saying that she will be more of a problem to the leavers in the cabinet when she is a backbencher because as one of the inner cabinet, 'she knew where all the bodies were buried'.
