Amazon takes full creative control of James Bond

On a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is furious, 10 is ecstatic, where are you?

What do we think about this?

For those who weren't aware, the reason there hadn't been a James Bond movie for quite a while, was a disagreement between Amazon, who held the distribution rights, and the Broccoli family, who held the creative rights.

The family were adamant that James Bond should be a British male, and it should only ever be a movie. They reportedly hated any mention of the word "content". Not sure where they stood on "franchise". Amazon presumably wanted to do what Amazon does, and Disney the hell out of it, like Star Wars, but on Prime.

There was recently a trademark suit filed by a third party on the well known legal doctrine, use it or lose it. So that appears to have forced the issue, but I'm still surprised the family were the ones to blink first. They still have a stake, so I guess that helps.

I'm torn. The obvious way forward after how the last film ended for me, was to jump forward and have films bases around his daughter's role in the service as a dublo, Mathilde. After she tragically becomes an orphan of course. And raised in Britain, obviously.

Keep it vaguely realistic but slightly futuristic, like the past films. Have her battling the forces of disinformation and er...global content producers using AI for evil purposes. And jokes about how M won't let her have time off for breastfeeding or supply vegan feminine products, naturally.

But obviously that was never going to happen under the Broccolis. But what else were they going to do? Reboot for a third time? That would have had to be one seriously good script to tempt me to the cinema. And the whole "who will be the next Bond actor" is so tedious. I really don't care if they're in a rubbish film, something that isn't remotely realistic or achingly on point with the PC brigade.

But this is Amazon. It seems highly likely they're going to so something stupid. Probably due to not understanding of the role of Bond in the British psyche, because they're American. It's not escapism (much), nostalgia (at all) or misogyny (ridiculous) for me. People have affairs at work. High pressure situations lead to unexpected liasons. Men dominate the service roles. Deal with it.

But women are in the job too. Have been for quite a while. Brave women who infiltrated the IRA, for example. There's an idea. Nigel Farage gets elected, the IRA have reactivated, and some damn fool has given Tommy Robinson a nuke. Put the nice he/she/they down 007 and report for duty.

I want an action film. A bloody good film with a genuinely creative script and kick ass stunts. In that order.

A series, I don't want. A spin off movie? Make it good, and you might tempt me. Tell me about Felix. My brother from another mother.

Of course Bezos has already tweeted, who do you want to be the next Bond? Sheesh.

A non-vote from me. I lost interest in 007 a long time ago and I really don't care what Amazon do. Good or bad I won't be watching.

I think that EON are probably wise to take the money and run. With costs escalating, chaos likely to occur at any time, heightened sensibilities on every subject, etc., there is now the spectre that a film could cost a fortune and then have to be pulled.

I would've honestly rather the series died with the last film (even though it wasn't really that great) than be left in the hands of Amazon who will treat it as nothing more than content to be milked by people who don't even think he's the hero of his own franchise. Okay, he isn't a saint, but nobody truly is, and realistically you can't be one in his line of work. The only thing Amazon can do to give me some degree of hope is announce Theo James to be the next Bond. But otherwise, this isn't particularly hopeful news to me.

I don't feel like it lends itself to a series format, personally. Each film has a distinct plot, which takes time to develop on screen, no doubt part of the reason the films are all 2-2.5h long. If you turn it into a series, people will expect storylines to be contiguous and I'm not convinced it would work. At a push, extended series' focussing on distinct storylines may.

I see no great reason Bond couldn't be female. No doubt some viewers would boycott it but I don't think the writers or the producers would be too concerned. The only real demographic constraint I would retain is that Bond should be British. Part of Bond's character is the quintessential Britishness. A non-British actor/actress may be fine but I think they would need to do a bloody good job on the accent and nuances.

Other than that, I'm not really bothered who runs the franchise.

The likes of Amazon, Netflix etc are constantly producing some fantastic content these days. Can't see an issue with it.

Even if one accepts that a female Bond is something you can do, it is a different argument as to whether or not it's something you should do. In fact I think you could more easily get away with not having a British actor play the role because Pierce Brosnan is Irish, and George Lazenby is Australian (I know he's arguably the weakest actor but that's nothing to do with him being Australian and more to do with barely being an actor in the first place). Personally my nomination for the next actor to fill the role would be Theo James. He was fantastic in The Gentlemen series.

I don't think it's unreasonable to worry about the direction the series will go with Amazon at the helm after Barbara Broccoli had a bit of a spat with the executives and rather colourfully referred to them as idiots. While she saw the Bond series as a family heirloom for cinema, Amazon will probably treat it as nothing more than content for milking through any medium they can. I can at least be cautiously optimistic in knowing that it wasn't Disney taking control.

I really cannot see them taking it in the wrong direction purely based on a fallout.

'Family heirloom for cinema'? Hilarious.

Ever since they created the brand there have been spinoff books, toys, video games and much more. Much of it a load of rubbish but officially licensed by the Broccoli's. If that also isn't milking it I don't know what is.

It’s about time Bond was kicked into the long grass. For me the later Bond films with Daniel Craig lacked the spirit of previous films. Craigs films were high action films with the Bond name attached. I don’t see Amazon improving things to be honest, just spin it for the money until people lose interest and then flog it on.

That all really depends on how much you trust the judgement of Broccoli and Wilson who've had a large amount of creative control of the series since Albert 'Cubby' Broccoli's passing. I disagree with some of the creative decisions they have made with some of the films, but the series has benefited from having a steady pair of creative hands and not temporary minds making permanent decisions.

Milking it would be treating it similarly to how Disney treated Marvel and Star Wars by making several TV series per year along with big budget films every few years. There might be more content, but to them it's merely a means of increasing their share price and dividend payments to their shareholders without any love and passion for the source material. To them, it's inconsequential how the films perform unless it directly hurts their own pockets.

The series has had it's high and lows, but I have never got the impression that Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson ever saw the series as merely a source of income. Plus on a personal level I just don't fancy such a significant part of British film history and culture having all of it's creative control being handed over to American film executives along with the subsequent Americanisation of the series (because let's face it, that's inevitable).

What do people think of the Equalizer? I was just about old enough to remember the original series. But I was surprised that both the movies (Denzel) and the TV series (Queen Latifa) really work.

But crucially, they work because they were clearly made to suit their respective formats and to really play to the strengths of their lead. I could accept Bond being handled like that, i.e. with real creative intelligence.

The newer series of Magnum P.I. too is pretty good, superior maybe even to the original. One potential issue with Bond is that the cost to produce a Bond series could be astronomical, so it really would have to be good. Magnum is extremely expensive due to being set in Hawai and all the car chases and outdoor shoots I guess. But without that, it wouldn't be Magnum.

How's that for a bizarre future direction under Amazon? Bond's daughter is not a dublo because crumbling Britain can't afford human assets (call back to one of the Craig Bond films). So she's now living the good life as the disinterested but can't quite let go caretaker of her Scottish family shooting/fishing estate (another calll back), operating as a part time investigator / assassin for people with nowhere else to turn, assisted by her ex-SAS/Army Int. mates and friendly contacts in MI5/6.

In her downtime she struggles with her inability to form long term romantic partnerships because she's an assassin and an orphan, who both hates and treasures the fact her father was the famous James Bond who sacrificed himself for her and would presumably be quite conflicted about his daughter's chosen path in life.

This is why I couldn't be a producer. I'm just rehashing what's already been done. Nothing original. My biggest fear for Amazon Bond. That was the genius of Broccoli, knowing her subject and that as a living thing it needs to progress, even as a reboot. Realising that in all the previous films, they'd not yet covered his backstory. That was both the most brilliant part of a Craig film, the Skyfall estate, and perhaps the lamest, a dubious baddie, an ex-agent with Mummy issues. Cliche!

Pretty much were I stand. The last film (can't even remember the name) was pathetic. Goodbye, Mr Bond.

RIP James Bond. It'll get turned into the next Marvel franchise, with a new movie every 6 months and endless spin offs about minor characters from the movies until even the diehard fans get fatigued by it all.

To my eye, Amazon has the weakest offering to draw people in. The Reacher series is fine, easily bingeable, but not a patch on the films. Not remotely worth a subscription.

So if they're going to turn Bond into a series like Reacher, that's surely not going to work. But using new hgh quality Bond films to lure people to Prime so they stay and watch hours of Reacher level stuff, that's probably going to work. More lovely data about your likes and dislikes.

Do they have the back catalogue too? Last I saw they were still free to air on ITV.

While I am fearing the worst from Amazon, just as Disney has probably released two new Star Wars spin offs in the time I've taken to write this, I have actually felt for years that James Bond could have spun off different characters into their own series/films.

We hear so much about James Bond being played in the future by a black person, or a female, or whatever - and while I don't really have an issue with changing the Bond character (as it has always done in film form) and the Equalizer series with a woman (now named Robyn McCall) is really enjoyable and has adapted to suit - I always felt that given there are other 00n characters, why not have films or series' that show what they get up to - and how they work with Bond, sort of creating that universe where everything is connected, but opens up loads of new opportunities.

I suspect Amazon will do something like this, but perhaps only with an ever changing Bond character. I really don't know, but unfortunately I expect that given CGI is cheap and AI is coming onboard, we'll just see poorly scripted forgettable action shows created en masse.

I think it's been the SciFi/Fantasy where Amazon has had the strongest series; The Man in the High Castle, The Boys, Fallout, Rings of Power, Wheel of Time, The Expanse.

Amazon gained some of the rights to Bond when they acquired MGM in 2021 and gained the back catalogue then. They already did one spin-off, 007: Road to a million.

ITV will be paying Amazon to show the Bond movies, it will be a commercial decision whether they consider that worthwhile versus making it exclusive. In the same way that various Marvel films pop up on BBC etc. even though they're owned by Disney.

Been a Bond fan since I was taken to see Live And Let Die as a child. I've read all the Ian Fleming Bond novels and short story's (even 007 in New York!), but only some of the following novels by other authors.

I imagine this will be the same. Watch the old movies at the cinema if I get the chance (James Bond season last year at The Prince Charles in London, for example), maybe watch the Amazon ones, maybe not.

I have cable TV, so can't watch Amazon prime (as far as I know), so doubt I'll watch any TV series.

Assuming by cable you mean Virgin, then it can be added on - https://www.virginmedia.com/the-edit/tv/how-to-watch-amazon-prime-on-virgin-tv
If you’re a Virgin Media customer armed with our V6 box (powered by TiVo®), Virgin TV 360 box or Stream from Virgin Media, you can get Prime Video direct on your telly once you’ve got a subscription to the service.
Though Prime is supplied over the internet, so as long as you have broadband and a suitable device (Smart TV, FireTV stick, etc.) you can watch it with a subscription.

Though curiously enough, currently the Bond movies aren't included with a Prime subscription, they're only showing as buy/rent.

I am Bond fan of sorts, but I think it's had its day.
I went downhill from when a View to a Kill was released.
I still watch them, but I'm not exactly impressed. The only recent one which I thought was great was Casino Royale, but that's about it.

Been a Bond fan since I was taken to see Live And Let Die as a child.
I did as well! It was an AA certificate (over 14's) but I was only about seven then, but they let me in with my dad. Lots of younger boys with their dads in there too.

By the time you've signed up to Amazon / Netflix / Disney / Paramount (the list goes on and on!) it actually makes Sky look like a bargain when everyone used to moan about the price of that!

I think you could do a good job of reviving the brand by casting Thomas the Tank Engine as Bond, with Diesel as the villain, obviously.

Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.
Enjoyed the last Bond film but no more than, say, a John Wick or Equalizer instalment. High time the franchise was put to pasture..or course Bezos will milk the whole thing dry and the journey to its inevitable full demise will be tortuous and embarrassing.

If anyone hasn't seen Bullet Train (2022), you need that in your life.

Best Thomas spin off ever.

The casting of Tom Cruise in those film was, shall we say, odd given how Reacher is described in the books

I think James the Red Engine would be a more natural choice for Bond, but I would agree with Diesel as the villain, and of course Mavis to be the Bond girl who works for him until she can't resist the charms of the splendid red mogul.

or course Bezos will milk the whole thing dry and the journey to its inevitable full demise will be tortuous and embarrassing.
Bezos had already made a post on Twitter/X asking who people would pick for the next Bond, and now I worry that Amazon will end up choosing actors based on social media reactions rather than the actual suitability for the role, and no disrespect to the man, but I do not want Henry Cavill as Bond! I suppose it's somewhat poetic that should this end up killing the series that it will be at the hands of an influential organisation ran by a wealthy bald white man with a lazy eye (Blofeld/Bezos).

As if this is even a thing!

It is completely unworthy of any interest. Studio takes over studio and will make a film (maybe) is not a news story!

The advantage is that unless you are desperate to see everything as soon as it is released, you can just subscribe to one for a couple of months, watch what interests you, then cancel and move on to the next one.

I love that you committed to your lack of interest completely in this assessment.

For those who don't know, it had been four years since the last Bond film, with nothing in production, meaning it will be at least six years before any new film.

By contrast, before Amazon got their hands on the rights to release them, leading to the impasse with the creative rights holders, films had been released pretty regularly.

Certainly in the original series, with a film every year or two. Even in the slower paced reboot era with Daniel Craig, there would be a marked building of media attention if a film seemed to be taking its time or seemed to be experiencing hiccups in development. Skyfall in particular, with people fretting that MGM going bankrupt might kill it for good.

So it might be telling that after the last film capped off the Craig era, there wasn't nearly as much attention (as far as I recall) once this creator-distributor impasse developed. Maybe the Brocolis came to realise Bond really has run his course.

Interesting that both creative/producing partners aren't actually retiring, but focusing on their other creative projects.

It's now come out Amazon paid $1 billion dollars for creative control. Which feels apt. A nice round evil number.
