Am I guaranteed the job?

Well it has been a yearlong process with Scotrail but I finally passed all my psychometric tests, the group bourdon, mechanical, reaction, etc, 2 interviews and 2 medicals.

Thanks for everyone that has replied to my threads and for the invaluable mock tests I found on here.

I’ve been offered a conditional employment based on my medicals (which I just found out I passed) and pre-employment checks (which I am guessing are my Disclosure Scotland and any references).

My question is:
Assuming my Disclosure Scotland and any references all come out fine (which they should) am I guaranteed the job?

What are the chances that Scotrail will take ages to give me a start date or just leave me by the wayside altogether?

You haven't got the job until you have the job offer and start date.

That's about as much as I expected, TDK. Fingers crossed I hear back from them soon. They've said they will let me know when they have a start date.

TDK when you have returned a signed contract with a start date on it can they still withdraw the offer if the start date is many months in the future?

Do they send for references from your present employer before they make you an offer??
I imagine that could cause a few problems for some if their employer had a request for a reference and then you didn't get offered the job.

I asked the TOC and they said that they would only phone my current employer AFTER they had employed me themselves. Which would make my current employer my former employer, but never mind. Not sure how it works if I get a bad reference. I shouldn't get a bad reference though so I'm not worried.

Where I work (non railway), a bad reference will be discussed with both the new recruit and the person giving the reference (assuming they are willing to), the intention being to find out what lies behind the reference.

For example, it may be that the role was not suitable for that individual, or that something in the working environment affected them negatively.

The point is that every case will be judged on its own merits, and it is not automatic that a poor reference means that any job offer is withdrawn.

I was about a week after passing medical to getting a contract and start date. Will depend on disclosure Scotland (PVG), they are not always the quickest.
