Alternatives to splitting at Derby during blockade

Whenever travelling southbound on a day out from Sheffield I normally split tickets at Derby, but obviously during the blockade no trains will call there so presumably this will invalidate split ticketing.

Can anyone come up with any alternatives? I know for example the Derbyshire Wayfarer is valid to Burton-on-Trent but you can't buy that in advance online and I prefer to plan in advance rather than get stuck in a queue on the day and miss my train. And also that won't help if travelling on the Midland mainline as EMT trains won't be stopping at Long Eaton either.

As you have said, if you know that your trains will not call at a certain station, you cannot do a regular split there. However, the Derbyshire Wayfarer is treated as a rover ticket and thus a season ticket for the purposes of Condition 14.2 of the National Rail Conditions of Travel (NRCoT). Thus you could do a non-stopping split at the last station of relevant validity.

Alternatively I would simply go with whatever www.trainsplit.com suggests.

Maybe a note to the council to start with, then a copy of the link to Mastercard or Visa in the UK if nothing's done.

I just ring them up and order them. They only charge for the cost of the ticket(s) (no postage charge) and delivery is usually very quick.

They can ask for the last three digits by post, as long as they have a secure system in place for storage and destroying it once processed. You can't ask for them by email, but post and telephone is fine.

Certainly, that's a no for Visa: Card verification value no longer allowed on mail order forms I would assume that Mastercard has a similar prohibition but haven't got time to search it out.

That said, I doubt that Derbyshire has a secure processing set-up to the level required by PCI to protect the card data - this would need to start in the post room when the mail first came into the building.

Oh! We still use them for post-although I concede we get very very few! It doesn't need to be a massive process, anything with card details in has to be opened in the card processing area, and should anything arrives there opened, we contact card holder. No complaints from the bank about the system. But, as I say, very very few.Ironically, we can't take the details over the phone, as we record calls, and don't have a system in place for secure (or secure enough) storage of the recordings!

You should be able to process mail order using the postcode numbers for verification, though it does still lead you open to some fraud. I guess it depends on the business and the nature of the goods/services.

Surely trains being diverted due to enginerring works (even if it is for a long period of time) doesn't invalidate a split? As I understand it, a split is valid if it is possible based on the ordinary timetable, even if the train is diverted on the day...?

Except that for a extended blockade the ordinary timetable is altered.

If the train you take is already planned to be diverted at the time of buying tickets, I don't think you could claim that a split at a station it would usually call at (but no longer does) is valid.

I’m currently on the XC Plymouth service doing Leeds-Birmingham New St split as:
LDS-Sheffield
SHF-Derby
DBY-BHM

Train Manager told me that during the blockade they’ve been advised not to accept split tickets using DBY.
His recommendation for this route was Chesterfield - and Trainsplit would seem to agree

I've looked at spit tickets for a journey to Walsall from Sheffield in 2 weeks time. It suggests splitting at Burton on Trent at a price of £27.95.

Think I will get a Derbyshire wayfarer as that is valid to Burton on Trent
