Alternatives for cancelled train with split tickets

My friend is booked on the 1242 Theale to Taunton today, changing at Newbury. We found the cheapest way was to split tickets at Castle Cary. However, today we can see the train from Newbury to Taunton is cancelled, as well as the ones following it. Would it be possible to travel via Reading on a train that doesn’t stop at Castle Cary, as otherwise it’s a very long wait that makes the journey pointless? What are the options if not?

You don’t have the automatic right to circumvent the requirement to call at Castle Cary, but you could always ask staff to endorse your ticket. Speak to them first.
