It seems that the world and his wife have had a go at improving on the Harry Beck underground map - some with great success.

Has anyone tried similarly to make an improved version of the National Rail maps? I've just a search of this forum and was surprised to find nothing at all on maps!

You obviously haven't seen project mapping then?

Lots of interesting maps on there. 1392 to be exact (at time of posting). It's fair to say that some are more successful than others. I think the franchise map is quite interesting, if a bit busy in places. And this circular overground map (now outdated) is an interesting concept. There's also the utterly bizarre Scottish edition of the national rail map, the point of which I frankly fail to see.

That looks like it has come directly from the desk of Nicola Sturgeon! Love the flipping making east west and south north. I cant see any way that would cause issues.

No, it's more like what the Daily Mail would imagine is in Nicola Sturgeon's desk. I'm a committed nationalist and even I think that map is completely stupid. It's so disconnected from reality.
