"Alternative fare" on Underground

I was just checking how much my fare would cost from Osterley to Mornington Crescent on the TFL website. It's £3.90 at peak times and £2.80 off peak. This just requires changing to the Northern Line at Leciester Square.

But it said there alternative fares. This would be £2.40 peak time.

Avoiding Zone 1 via Turnham Green, Gunnersbury and Camden Road/Camden Town (or Kentish Town/Kentish Town West)

But sorry if I sound stupid I have no idea what exact route/changes I would need to do this?

Can anyone please tell me exactly how I can get the alternative fare by avoiding Zone 1 from Osterley to Mornington Crescent?

From looking at a tube map it would appear you'd go the following route:

1. Piccadilly line to Chiswick Park Acton Town
2. District to Turnham Green
3. District to Gunnersbury (touch the pink reader here)
4. Overground to Camden Road
5. Walk to Camden Town tube
6. Northern line to Mornington Crescent

It is possible but it would be a horrendous journey.

Osterley to Hammersmith. Then a westbound District line to Gunnersbury, then London Overground to Camden Road, then walk to Camden Town and Northern Line one stop to Mornington Crescent.

Alternatively you could change from the Piccadilly Line to the District at Acton Town and then again at Turnham Green.

I guess it depends how much you value your time..

If you did go that way, you might as well just walk from Camden Road to Mornington Crescent, rather than bother getting on the Northern Line for one stop.

How about this? Say if touched in at Osterley just before the 16:00 peak time, and touched out at another station (which would obviously be between 16:00-19:00 peak times) what fare would I get charged? Peak or off-peak?

Off-peak - it's always based on when you touch in.

Peak fares are based ONLY on touch-in. You would get the off-peak fare in that scenario.

The fare is decided by the time of the first touch in on a journey. If it is before 1600 then the WHOLE JOURNEY is charged off-peak.

The 27 bus covers almost all that journey without change. Starting from Osterley, you'd only pay for the one journey too, changing to the 27 at Turnham Green, and much less hassle than going via Kentish Town etc!

This would cost more though as the off peak fare is £1.50 and the bus is £1.50.
Unless you are proposing a bus from Osterley to intercept the 27 somewhere?

I am, using the new bus fare policy, two buses boarded within the hour. Might not work on the return, but then you have the cut-off. Still consider this is a more rational journey than the convoluted one proposed by rail avoiding Zone 1.

Thank you - I couldn't be sure it was the H91, because I still think of i as the 91, change at Hounslow West for London Airport. On which prototype Routemaster RM2 is operating, to see whether that type of bus will ever go into full production. I blame my age!

The train via the route mentioned in the opening post is around 1 hour 30 mins, but is actually a little bit quicker than that by changing at Earl's Court, West Brompton & Camden Road/Town.

I specified via Finchley Road & Frognal and de-selected bus to get a rail only journey which would be priced at the cheaper rate.

Have to agree that the bus times don't give that mode of transport the appeal I thought they might. If I was doing the return journey, time being no object, then Id try the bus one way and train(s) the other to compare and contrast. Despite my name, I actually enjoy rail travel and am now too old to really appreciate long bus journeys, particularly when stuck in traffic.
