ALR in less than a week, need ideas.

I'm doing an ALR starting next Saturday morning, I was wondering which rural lines are worth going to see/travel on.

Basically if people can suggest lines which I must travel on because of how awesome they are, I will be very grateful.

I think the bog-standard suggestions here are:

West Highlands
Far North (with Kyle of Lochlash normally over the Wick route)
Settle - Carlisle

And a few others, like the WCML through the Lakes...

I'd say anywhere thats furthest from you and therefore normally very expensive. That and some long distance ones like The Highland Cheiftain.

I'd try and get the Perth-Inverness-Wick Section Done. And also malliag-fort-william ")

If you wanted to do the Fort William Section on the sleeper. Maybe do it up to fort william arr 1000, catch the citylink. cheap fares and over to inverness

Heart of Wales for sure, also worth giving the Cambrian a go. West Highland, Highland and Kyle of Lochalsh lines (not forgetting the Far North) all worth doing too.

There is an alternative. You can do West Highland and Kyle on the same day.

It works best on a Friday night at this time of year. I am doing it this Friday. You can do the WAG Express Cardiff - Crewe Virgin to Watford Sleeper to Fort William. If it is Saturday you have a 1212 to Mallaig otherwise you catch the steamer but that is £26 one way. Wait for the 1345 ferry to Armadale £4.05 and 1430 (Bus 51) to Kyle of Lochalsh arr 1519 plenty of time for the 1715 to Inverness. You then have 2 nights B&B do Far North next day you will also have time to do Aberdeen and back as well then come back on the Highland Cheiften.
