I’m currently travelling and have found myself in Almaty, Kazakhstan. They have a fairly recently opened metro system (about a decade ago) which had 11 stops. The stations are fairly ornate but I cant work out how the trains are powered. There are no diesel fumes or engine noises, there only seems to be two running rails (that I can see) and there is no overhead wires. I’ve done Google search but can’t find anything. Does anyone here know? My only guess is that the running rails are directly electrified. But I guess the view is limited from the platform and there could indeed be a third rail, unfortunately, whilst photography is allowed, if you get too close to the edge, the guard attacks
