Quick question - does anyone know how much All Line Rovers cost for one day, first and standard class? Just trying to plan an epic one-day trip at the moment....thanks in advance!!

The shortest time period you can get one for is 7 days

As above, 7 or 14 days
For single days, what you can do is purchase a local area Rover ticket, but the majority are Standard Class
What I tend to do is purchase short trip First Class Advance, with double the station allowance between connections
Equally, sometimes it can be cheaper to take an alternative route

An example is :
04:25 Glasgow Central - Preston
Preston - Manchester
Manchester - Euston (giving me a second breakfast)
I then travel back on the 16:30 Euston - Glasgow

Depending on the railcard, you can get a discount on first + standard class (disabled, HM-Forces and senior?), or just standard (16-25, though I think that it's a tad rude, as we pay the same price as the senior railcard!)

Hi

I am new to this and was looking for information about how to enjoy a week’s exploring around the UK.

The last time I did it was in 1990 which was great (being first class as well) but with a special birthday (late September) coming up this year I want to do it again.

I had an interesting experience with three yuppies on a London Victoria to Brighton train in 1990 where the yuppies thought I didn’t have a first class ticket because I was casually dressed in jeans and had a carrier bag - not dressed in a pin-striped suit with an executive case.

I played a fool pretending it didn’t matter what ticket I had and when the inspector came and checked the tickets he was more polite to me than them as they had daily or return tickets - each yuppie had their ticket clipped and he said “Thanks” to each of them, but all he did with me was glance at my ticket and then said, “Thank you very much sir” and smiled at me. He was probably surprised and thought he had better treat me with more respect.

When the inspector left I looked over and said to the yuppies, “Well, have you anything to say now?” They sulked and avoided eye-to-eye contact with me for the remainder of the journey and when we all got off I told them it was nice travelling first class and wished them all the best.

This is a great story I have told many and I will take copies with me to hand out in case this happens again.

So, I have got to maximise my value for money as it will be a busy week travelling.

Travelling with Wrexham and Shropshire or Virgin will give you free meals, meaning you spend less.

Also, a berth on the sleeper is cheaper than a hotel room

That is exactly what I did last year
Thankfully the rumoured time restrictions have not been applied

I generally travelled southbound on the sleepers, so all my days started at London
The only exceptions were the :
Saturday nights, as there are no sleepers
northbound Penzance sleeper, so as to make the first WSR departure from London Marylebone
northbound Fort William sleeper
last day so as to take advantage of the 04:25 Glasgow - Euston (originally planned as a mega Glasgow - Euston day, but changed into a Cardiff - Crewe instead)

With careful planning you can have virtually all your meals for "free" on First Class
The only meals I bought were :
Saturday, M&S at London Euston northbound back to Glasgow
Northbound East Coast; using £5 vouchers two meals cost £12
Southbound sleeper from Inverness; Haggis at £6
