Hello, I'm using a 7 day ALR this week and for the first couple of days it worked perfectly in ticket barriers. But from day 3 every single ticket machine hasn't accepted it. Anybody know why this is? It's going to get very irritating as I'm planning on covering a lot of journeys to make the most of it. Thanks

Could it have become demagnetised? did you put it near anything that could have affected the magnetic strip (I understand potentially a mobile phone could do this)

I know of cases back in the days before smartphones when flip phones could contain strong magnets and demagnetise tickets, but out of interest, has anyone heard of this happening with a modern smartphone (since I don't believe any/many of them should contain magnets)?

With regards to the original question, I assume you've moved to a different area controlled by a different TOC? Could just be they haven't coded their barriers to take all line rovers. Due to the low but non-zero risk of a ticket barrier doing something weird with my ticket, and the unlikelihood of it being replaced should that happen, when I used an ALR last I never used the barriers anyway.

As above, when doing an ALR myself, my ticket never touched a ticket barrier, always a flash to the gateline staff.

Modern phones still contain an electro-magnetic vibration motor but you could be right that they're not powerful enough to make a difference. I make no effort to store tickets away from my phone and I've not observed any problem.

( I get plenty of 105/113 barrier errors but these seem to be programming faults since they occur within the 30 seconds from ticket vending machine to gateline.)

Any three digit ones are most certainly the barrier programming.

Ticket encoding issues will be 07/08/09 etc.

3 digit error codes may be the programming of the barriers or what the barriers are reading from the magnetic strip. Without the codes it is difficult to say.

From my own personal experience with an ALR last year (bought online from GWR), my one only worked the barriers at three locations: Exeter St Davids, Liverpool Street and Ipswich. Everywhere else it brought up a variety of error numbers on the barriers. Interestingly, I visited Exeter during the ticket's fifth day of validity and Liverpool Street/Ipswich during the last day.

Not with a rail ticket, but on one occasion I was staying at a Travelodge, on returning to the hotel after my evening out my keycard refused to unlock my room door. Went to reception and she asked if I'd had the card near my phone (which I had, as I'd put it in the same pocket as my iphone) and she had to reprogramme the card.

The barriers at Exeter St David's are well programmed I find, and they accept the Devon Day Ranger too. Exeter Central or Plymouth though, you can forget it.

I've never had a problem with using rover/ranger tickets at Cardiff Central either.

I've had exactly the same thing but the card was nowhere near my phone, they're just poor cards

ilearned this last year when the barriers at Edinbrugh haymarket kept my all line rover and it took 20 minuites for staff to find it , so now any rail rover never leaves the wallet
