All Line Rover

I'm currently in the process of planning an all line rover for next year, and I've got one day left to fill (a Friday). Any recommendations as to what to do or see? I was thinking the Ffestiniog Railway (tied in with a visit to Llanfairpwll...goch and its 6 metre long sign!) but I haven't got far beyond that. I would be starting from Didcot Parkway or possibly Oxford. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Will have covered, most notably, both the sleepers, the settle and Carlisle, east and west coast mainlines, hs1 and grand central, to name a few.

Also, I'm planning an ALR as well-any advice on how to kill time overnight, other than sleepers?

I planned one in my free time and I got both sleepers, friends, home, family and station waiting rooms with sofas.

You could always spend a night on a longish overnight service, such as this, or this or even this.

When I did an ALR in 2012 my last journey was the southbound sleeper from Glasgow which left at 2350 on the final day.

I started my ALR with the sleeper from Watford Junction at 0010 on day 1.

Always good to max out the validity/

I spent a night in Kyle of Lochalsh not sleeping, didn't want the otters to bite my toes off

the run to Kyle of Lochalsh is nice on a summer evening if the sun's out, btw

The Skye circular is my favourite rail journey and a must on an ALR.

Train to Kyle of Lochalsh, bus to Armadale, ferry to Mallaig, train to Fort William thence onto Glasgow/Edinburgh and the South.

Best done in the height of summer when it's light till 11pm up there and the ferries and buses are more frequent.

So many things to do on an ALR! Personally, if I had a spare day on an ALR I'd have three primary choices:

A) Hunt down as many winners on foreign territory as possible;
B) Go for as many miles as possible on my favourite motive power;
C) Just go crazy and aim for as many miles as possible in a day, even if it meant doing the same sector over and over again!
