So you’re happy to give the guard commission at the same time as taking work (and job security) away from the more poorly paid ticket office staff?
See my other comment about it taking half an hour to issue a ticket in my nearest ticket office.

Add that to my (completely unrelated in terms of ticket) inability to get anyone at all to issue me a (valid from the station I was at) day ranger ticket today at major UK city stations and you can perhaps understand why people don’t get along with ticket offices like they used to.

Do ticket office staff earn the commission from tickets they issue?

Ok, I’d be more likely to reconsider the approach if they did.

I certainly wasn’t an early adopter of e tickets and given the option of paper tickets I’d always considered the ticket office to be the place to go for anything from day to day ticket purchasing to (crucially) those slightly out of the ordinary tickets like a ranger / rover ticket and always considered it to be THE place to get the full range of fares and advice on what to buy. That in many places is completely gone now, selling simple day returns is a hindrance and there’s increasingly no chance of getting anything more complicated such as, heaven forbid, a day ranger ticket that is valid from that station.

Certainly something (I accept it’ll be a rare combination but ought to be doable) like an ALR to start 2 days later with a couple of RTVs thrown in the mix and you’ve got a proper battle on your hands and increasingly you’re made aware of what a hindrance you are for (and I quote) giving them work and job security.
