Just for fun, I have created an app for which presents data for all stations in Great Britain. It shows passenger usage and other stats using the open data provided from the government, in (hopefully) an attractive way.

It's available for Android devices, and can be downloaded from the Google Play store here.

Thought you guys would be the perfect people to take a look. Feel free to post any feedback!

Fantastic! Would be nice if (this is purely from a selfish point of view-though I suspect others will agree) there was a way for people to tick off the stations they've visited? Seeing a radius of stations from my house would be interesting (and, admittedly, quite satisfying!)

This feature already exists (if you give the app access to your phone's GPS). Tap on the "distance" column to show nearest stations, or use the filter-by-distance feature.

Apologies, I missed the word 'required' out... if I could filter it to show just the stations I've visited, or just the stations I haven't visited-then it'd be literally perfect!

Ah, got you. Will bear that in mind, probably could add an ability to "tag" stations at some point.

I have added a new "Favourites" feature in V1.03. You can use this to bookmark particular stations you are interested in / have visited.

Enjoy!

Thanks! Is there a limit to how many stations I can favourite?

Downloaded the app - It's great! I think there should be a way of zooming out more than you can right now so I can see where everything on the entire UK map - I often get lost while looking at stations far way from my area that are in the middle of nowhere.

If you add that function, you'll join Groundhopper and Untappd as the "must have" apps for regular posters on here!

A good app would be one you could tick off stations visited and one you coukd mark lines travelled

Well I've just downloaded it and it does what it says on the tin so to speak. Many thanks Steve for your hard work to get this done.
@DarloRich - I won't insult your intelligence by trying to simplify the description on the app - I couldn't as it is simple enough in itself.
@route101 - it is a "good app" - maybe you meant a "better app..."

I dont understand the point or the purpose.

Well done to the person who has created the app. It is something I could never do. I simply have no idea where you start with something like that! I respect them for having the ability and insight to create such a thing.

I dont understand the point or the purpose.

It is (as far as I can tell) an app primarily for those people who have an interest in station usage figures. It offers a list of all the Network Rail stations in order of usage and details the most up to date figures for each station along with other information such as who owns the station and what route the station is based on. There is also links to the National Rail website where you can find details of station facilities and also the next departures.

It also has a feature where it will use your phone's location to offer you your nearest stations (this doesn't appear to work on my phone though). This would make finding your local stations easier as it lacks a search function, and the only other option is to scour through the list to find a particular station.

I don't know if I've described it very well as I've only had a quick scan over the app but how I've described it above is how I see it. If you're not interested in usage figures then there is probably no point or purpose from your point of view, nor will it improve your life.

I will keep an eye on this thread to see if the app develops and grows further, but for now it doesn't really offer me any reason to keep it. That said, it is a well produced app and is easy to navigate (be even easier with a search function) so well done to the developer for that.

Thank you. That is very helpful.

I am not sending random people I dont know messages like some kind of mad stalker. Thanks.
Well if you don't want to help yourself thats fine, but please can you be more thoughtful in your replies.

As "Do you have an answer?" does come across as condescending / lack of politeness / to direct.
I have no idea if you are aware of that or not.

My motto is treat people how you want to be treated. I find that gets me the results out of life which is most of use to me.

However, as it's a diverse world, something different may well work for you.

I like the inclusion of annual patronage figures. As someone who focuses a lot on stations at the bottom end of this list (shameless self-promotion for my blog in my signature), something like this could prove very useful. Manually updating my endless spreadsheets can get quite dull at times.

I echo the ability to easily tick off stations which one has visited. Again, my local spreadsheets do not reflect the stations I have visited in a very visual format, instead just listing them in alphabetical order. I could have easily missed a load off.

I wonder if it would be possible to have a version which shows railway lines on there rather than the default Google Maps background. Something that includes the geography of the network would help my understanding.

There's certainly a lot of potential!

Wow thanks for this, it's really useful especially when I'm out and about near the line to know when the next train is!
