First one involves two changes, second involves an overnighter. It is impossible to go from Wick to London with only one change without having to stay overnight, either in Inverness or on da sleeper.

Of course, overnighters were not in the original question, but my point is valid: the Far North is a bugger to get to!

Denton would be a bugger, as currently it's a change at Stalybridge then Manchester? Reddish South is better as you can go from Reddish North to Manchester and change there, or on the stopper to Sheffield and go that way.

techniquest, there is no difference routing wise between denton and reddish south.
depending upon which way the train is operating, one would have to EITHER
a) change at stockport
OR
b) change at man picc and guide bridge / stalybridge.
in fact there is an official easement in the routing tables to allow for these two stations.

I'm going to try an iffy one and suggest Llandudno (Canol Y Dref)...

After all...there are IIRC no direct services from there to anywhere other than the Conwy Valley line, so one needs to change at Cyfford Llandudno. Then the Pendo that ye boarded there (Shed-hauled along the NWC line) re-joins the knitting at Crewe. The traction change effectively turns it from a Diesel service to an electric one, and therefore - With the train switching from one roster to another - Could count as a second change...:razz::D

On the other hand, any of the request stops along the NWC line west of Cyfford Llandudno could also count for the same reason, as - Not being served by any of the Pendos up there - One has to change service at least once, even if they don't actually change what line they're using! :)

At home in North London, wishing I was bashing a t
Llandudno (Canol Y Dref)...
Llandudno - Llandudno Junction, then Llandudno Junction - Euston via Virgin is direct unless they chuck you off the pendo because they need it for the next drag as the one they were going to use has had its coupler fail (I'd had this done to me) so it is possible!

What about Thurso?
Thurso - Inverness, then Inverness to... oh wait, you can get HST direct to London King's Cross can't you.:|

Me123 has already pointed that one out. Although it's theoretically possible, in reality it isn't, due to timings. (The HC leaves Inverness at 0750 I think).

I didn't know it had services to Wigan and Preston at the minute?

Hang about...What about any of the following stations on the North Downs line?
  • Crowthorne
  • Sandhurst
  • Blackwater
  • Farnborough North
  • North Camp
  • Ash
  • Wanborough
  • Shalford
  • Chilworth
  • Dorking West/Deepdene
  • Betchworth
Although it's physically possible to run a single train to London from these stations (By reversing at Reading, Guildford, Aldershot, Wokingham, Redhill or Gatwick Apt), there are no services that actually do this...Thus one needs to change at one of the above reversal stations to reach London! 8)

You're missing the point, Death. We're looking for stations that require more than one change to reach London. With just one change you can reach a variety of London terminus stations! Change at:-

Reading for London Paddington / London Waterloo
Wokingham for London Waterloo
Guildford for London Waterloo / London Bridge
Redhill / Gatwick for London Victoria / London Bridge

Wanborough / Ash are also both served by the Guildford to Ascot services. If travelling from these stations you just need to change at either Aldershot or Guildford for a direct service into London Waterloo (or additionally London Bridge from the latter) - again only one change required to get to / from London.

;) :p

If fact you wouldn't even need a reversal to get to London as the North Downs line enters Redhill from the south  The mileposts on the North Downs line (even up our end, Death) are actually measured from Charing Cross via Redhill.

Hmmm...I always thought that Redhill was approached by the ND line from the North West, in a similar fashion to how the line approaches Guildford. I've only visited Redhill once though, and I only stayed there for about an hour when I was there anyway! 8)

The mileposts on the North Downs line (even up our end, Death) are actually measured from Charing Cross via Redhill.
Is that why the milepost visible through the fence near Synhurst FC has a distance marked at 54m 05c, and the bridge at Blackwater marked 55m 54c, then?:D

Now I'd always thought that those measurements were odd, as there's no way that either Guildford or Reading could be that far away from Blackwater...I'd always assumed though that when the line was originally measured up that the distances had been taken from either Guildford or Reading, and someone had made a mathematical error whilst totting up the number of footstep or yardstick measurements taken!:lol::razz:

Cheers for clearing that up, Damon! <D

No probs. The reason for it is that the line was operated by the South Eastern Railway from it's opening, so the mileposts were therefore measured from their London terminus. In fact when the line opened, services actually did operate between Reading and Charing Cross via Guildford and Redhill. In later years - when first-gen units ruled the line and my Dad was somewhat younger - services operated between Reading and Tonbridge rather than Gatwick. These services still required a reversal at Redhill but veered to the left almost immediately after departure, rather than continuing down the Brighton mainline as they do now.

Get out!

Tan-Y-Bwlch on the FR to Minffordd, 158 to Machylleth, then service joins with the one from Aberystwyth, to form a new service to Birmingham, then Pendo to Euston. :?:

I was actually referring to starting from Reddish North vice Reddish South...
