Well, you could be pedantic and make that one change by utilising the free (to rail ticket holders) bus from the bay to Central station.
As for Salford Central having direct trains to Wigan North Western, can't say I noticed them in the timetables on Friday and I doubt they're terribly regular. But I see someone else already replied...
Trying to think of some places where you need to change more than once in Wales. Knighton came to mind but then you've got WSMR now.
Hmm...I can't think of anywhere in Wales at all that requires more than one change to London that hasn't been mentioned already.
As for there not being any through Whitby to Newcastle trains, there was in 2006 I believe, Sundays only and possibly only from Newcastle, but I no longer have the timetable to check.

Train was 2K20 - 1103 MAN - CRE was about 1124 off I think.
Should have very quickly made a JST ON TOUR! sign in your notebook and shoved it up by you in the window instead
