I used this line recently. There is a bus rail replacement currently between Creueta and Benidorm. The line is pretty scenic once you change onto the diesel tram train to Denia. Has there ever been trough running from Alicante to Benidorm?

Was built as Alicante-Denia. Details in spanish wikipedia:

The early history reads a bit like the Welsh Highland story but with a happy ending.

Proposal for a broad gauge line in 1864, various other proposals, concessions let, a bankruptcy, concession let for a metre gauge line in 1910, opened in 1915. Became part of EFE, precursor of FEVE. In 1986 devolved to the new FGV which progressively electrified and upgraded the busy part which expanded into Alicante TRAM.

Parts of what is now FGV's Metrovalencia were also FEVE metre gauge lines.

There was also a connecting metre gauge line running from Denia to Gandia, Cullera and then inland to Carcaixent. Carcaixent to Cullera closed completely in 1969 but Cullera to Gandia was converted to broad gauge and linked to the existing heavy rail line from Valencia. Gandia to Denia closed in 1974 with the intention of converting this to broad gauge too, but it never happened.

The latest proposal is to reopen Gandia to Denia, but as extension of the Benidorm tram-train. It does look as though this has firm support and would be a very useful link.

Interesting info.

I noticed leaving Alicante just before entering a tunnel a disused section of line continues to next to the road. Cant follow it further Google Earth.

If it was a single track joining you on the right, travelling towards the tunnel, that is the original alignment from La Marina station, now used by route 5 back to Porta del Mar by the main pier. See
maybe out of use at present?
A new tunnel was built to avoid the congested single line alignment of the original route at this point around 2018. The line to Porta del Mar closed in 2013 (having had a very poor service after the city-centre extension opened) but has now reopened with a decent timetable.
