Aldwych

Aldwych tube station is the most famous closed tube station. I think it should be opened up as a museum so every one can see instead of just the occasional tour. What do u think?

One of the other closed stations (Brompton Road) has recently been bought I believe for such purposes. No doubt the admission price will be the usual tourist rip-off rates charged by other London attractions.

Aldwych opens quite often and for some reason is very popular and provides useful income to London Transport Museum. Opening it full time, the novelty would wear off. (I also believe that LTM charge too much for the tours but as they always sell out, what do I know?)

Having had a look round a few times, I don't see why there is such a big fuss about Aldwych. There's not much there that can't be seen for free (if you have a travel ticket) at many other open stations on the network. Some tunnels with tracks in, some passageways, a broken lift and a ticket office.

If Brompton Road or York Way or Down Street etc.. were to be opened in their current state then that might be interesting.

Yeah, but Aldwych also has an old 1972 stock train stored somewhere down the tunnel. That alone makes it far more impressive than any of the other closed deep level stations.

There's already the LT museum, London doesn't need another.

Anyway, if Aldwych was a museum, where would they film 'tube' scenes for TV and films?

In Skyfall they used the closed platforms of Charing Cross to film the tube scenes.

Because it's not as famous as Aldwych.

I suspect Aldwych is more of a revenue earner for TfL since it closed in 1994 for passenger traffic, thanks to the regular special openings and use for filming by tv companies.

Same in Thor as well (though they didn't pretend it was elsewhere - it also amused me that the tube ran as normal during an alien attack)
