Aldermaston to Chester

Can anyone tell me if an Anytime return between these 2 stations would allow you to travel via Newport (SW) or Hereford on a leg of the journey, rather than the obvious route through Birmingham & Crewe?

In addition to the shortest route(s) and direct trains, permitted routes are defined in the Routeing Guide.

Aldermaston is associated with two Routeing Points (RPs): Reading Group and Westbury Group.

Chester is a RP.

For tickets routed "Not London" - which I will assume is what you require - both Reading and Aldermaston pass the fares check rule, so either can be used as a Routeing Point in that case.

Permitted routes from Reading Group to Chester Group are on the following maps:

• MW
• MW+BC
• MW+LC
• via London (not applicable for Rte: "Not London" tickets)

Permitted routes from Westbury Group to Chester Group are on the following maps:

• BD
• BD+CH
• CE+BC
• CE+CC
• MW
• MW+BC
• MW+LC
• WX+LC
• WX+LC+CL
• via London (not applicable for Rte: "Not London" tickets)

Just to check my understanding, as Reading allows BD, although Reading isn't shown on BD, the routeing is allowable. (I've been trying to get my head round the routeing guide for weeks now and am still having trouble knowing if I'm right with what I think).

It seems that yorkie might have quoted from an out-of-date version of the Routeing Guide. The current yellow pages list the routeing permission for Reading Group to Chester as MW, MW+BC, MW+LC, in addition to LONDON. This will explain why Reading is missing from map BD, as they have been changed.

Sadly none of the maps permit travel via Newport S Wales and Hereford.

The National Rail journey planner will give fares via Newport - but on closer inspection it requires two tickets

Oh dear, both yorkie and bb21 have got in a bit of a muddle.

yorkie has got his lists of maps the wrong way round, listing the map combinations for routes from Westbury as those from Reading and vice versa.

And bb21 has said that none of the maps permit travel via Newport and Hereford, when, if you travel via Westbury, Map BD is allowed and Newport and Hereford are both on that map between Westbury and Chester

Yes you're right. I went and investigated the issues brought up about Reading, but did not check Westbury , before replying.

That's a bit of a bummer as I've told my mate he could come back via Newport if he wanted on a Reading - Chester ticket... Oops!
