I always wondered why they built Stansted as a terminus. Same with Manchester, even the 3rd platform you have to think, thats a bit of a waste of space there.

Stansted was designed with the possibility of becoming a through station. Although a lot of stuff has subsequently been built or installed beyond the buffers, there was deliberately nothing designed (structurally) in the way to prevent a future rail line continuing out the other side of the terminal.

Sadly more and more of the terminal is being redeveloped with the bottom line in mind. It was also designed to make landside -> airside a transparent process, with planes visible from check-in. Now you go through security and are forced through a commercial slalom from hell. Plus a certain man called Mick insists on the cheapest possible sheds instead of more comfortable satellites for his flights. </architectural rant>

How far is Exeter Airport away from the nearest station? Shoreham is a strong walk waway from Shoreham station. What about Plymouth Airport? Newquay?

Nearest stations to Exeter are Pinhoe or Digby and Sowton. Broadclyst Station (closed) is nearer, but on the wrong side of the airfield to the terminal.

Plymouth is on the outskirts and isn't really worth bothering with (the largest planes it can take are 40 seaters on Domestic Routes)

Newquay is served by Western Greyhound buses, again it doesn't see that much sheduled stuff (BA once a day, Air South West to London and possibly ireland)

Keep hearing stories about building a spur off the main line to Bristol Airport but apparently there are some hills in the way?

It's hardly a major airport though and I think there are much more important transport projects in the area that need funding. Would a bus link from Nailsea/Backwell or Yatton be quicker?

Does Leeds/Bradford have no train service?

Same goes for Liverpool, Norwich, Bournemouth, Sheffield....plus a few more I would imagine.

You don't always need a rail link when a good bus service (every 5 to 7 minutes or so) can do the job.

except when the bus travels on a road, in a city, which in england are pretty much all congested.

In Leeds, the bus travels down Kirkstall Road, probably one of the most congested roads I have ever had to misfortune to commute down.

Frequency of service doesn't mean squat unless you can provide a fast enough journey time.
