Virgin Trains and SWT used to send out tickets in this format until recently. You might find some 'approved resellers' or whatnot giving them out still.

The big problem is that most barriers don't accept them (even though they could, as proved by Eurostar).

I remember Virgin online and telesales always issued them.

Were they called ELGAR stock?

They didn't fit the barriers, but they were quite good for advances because all the info was on one ticket! Much easier :D

Yes. I saw some a few weeks ago, they were in possession of Sunderland supporters going to their game at Arsenal. Due to the high cost of travelling with Grand Central (who still do not do Advance tickets :o), they chose to drive to Durham and get East Coast from there. I assume they booked with a travel agent but I have no idea which one.

Yes, Eurostar still issue Elgar tickets for any domestic travel booked through them. (they also issue you with gate passes for the underground but not for National Rail)

Last time I saw that style of ticket was when I used an EMT carnet in 2008. Are carnets still issued this way?

1 month in advance, and i cant get EC advance tickets for cheaper than GCs off peak tickets.
On the whole, GC are cheaper, and dont restrict you like advance tickets do.

Interesting, I was only reading this thread this morning. I am now sitting on an EC service bound for King's Cross, and the couple sitting opposite me are in possession of airline-style tickets.

I'd imagine it's convenient for travel agents to do 'em that way, since they'll have the paperstock and printers setup for Eurostar.

On the whole, GC are cheaper,
I picked Wed 27 April.

0800 KGX - YRK £13 (EC Advance Sgl)
0804 KGX - YRK £15 (GC Mobitix which hardly anyone knows about)

1127 KGX - YRK £45.00 (GC Off Peak Sgl)
1130 KGX - YRK £19.60 (EC Advance Sgl)

1650 KGX - YRK £65.00 (GC Anytime Sgl)
1700 KGX - YRK £32.50 (EC Advance Sgl)

1918 KGX - YRK £45.00 (GC Off Peak Sgl)
2000 KGX - YRK £25.35 (EC Advance Sgl)

I live in York and don't expect to ever travel on GC south of York again. I think that tells something?

and dont restrict you like advance tickets do.
Yeah, like if I missed the 1127 I could wait for the 1918. I'm not sure that many people would really consider that to be a massive bonus when booking their ticket?

The people on the airline style tickets were on Advance tickets, clearly they disagree with your position. In their case, only one GC train each way was really suitable for their needs, really (on the outward, I suppose the later train would be doable, just. and on the return missing their train would incur an overnight stay!) so their flexibility on GC isn't really increased.

I think most avid readers of this forum would recognise that, overall I am pro-GC, but their ticketing policy is absolutely abysmal, and has been a shambles right from the start (and it's changed a lot since then).

SNCF-issued tickets are always on them, including any purchased for use in the UK. There's a faint embossed 'GB' or 'F' that's supposed to denote the country of issue - I've had both French tickets issued here and UK tickets issued in France fairly recently.
