Anyone been on a Dakota? I was thinking of a [significant] birthday trip with invited friends from Coventry "airport" when the UK clamped down on the rules... For a while it seemed as though a trip from somwewhere in Belgium might work, then Covid struck. Might this still be a goer anywhere ?

Aero Legends have been on about offering flights over Normandy in their Dakota's for a few years now, not sure if they have succeeded yet.

About Thirty years ago I was in the Yukon with my father and needed to return to UK - first flight was on a DC3 from Dawson to Whitehorse - Air North a Canadian internal flight -

Not many mentions of Boeing 707s, I was lucky enough to do two Gatwick - Paphos return trips with Cyprus Airways in the late 1980s, also did a return to Italy in the 1960s, I was only 10 so I'm not sure but it was either by Societa Aerea Mediterranea DC3 or DC6, luxury of the lot was an early 2000s transfer from Malta to Gozo by Mil Mi8 helicopter

Twin Otter (shared the row of seats with a Marlin) (Air Vanuatu)
Harbin YH12 (Shared the row of seats with a bag of live chickens) (Air Vanuatu)

The most memorable experience has to be an A340-300, fully loaded for a 12 hour flight from Santiago to Wellington. That thing took forever to get off the ground

I'm not going to get bogged down in the various different types of the model. Mostly because I have no idea what different model types I've been on.

My experience is pretty vanilla all in all. This probably reflects the fact that my only flying experience until I was 21 was on long-haul to and from Australia which, in the 80s and 90s, meant a 747.

Boeing: 737, 747, 777
Airbus: A319, A320, A321, A330, A340, A380
ATR: 42, 72
Embraer: CRJ145, E175, E190
De Havilland: Q400/Dash-8.

ATL98 Carvair G-ASKN Southend - Ostend in 1965. Glad we had the same plane coming back because we knew it had flown successfully a week before! Basic plane was older than me. Not keen at all on flying so only other ones were two Boeing 757s.

There are still a few membership organisations in Europe offering DC-3 flights if you're willing to travel.

Search for

Dakota Norway
DC Assocation (Finland)
DC-3 Vennerne (Denmark)

The Dutch DC-3 has just been retired from regular flights but I read they might become a membership association in conjunction with the Aviodrome.

That is interesting, thank you very much. Maybe something for my 75th... or, more sensibly, just get it done in case I don't make it!
... oh dear, the Danish one says
Unfortunately, our lovely old plane is "grounded" and will not be in the air again until it has gone through the major thorough overhaul (also called IRAN). It is a big challenge to get started again – financially, practically – but we are working hard to find a solution.

I only started keeping detailed records in 1999, but in the 10 years before that made various trips to the US, including Pan Am and TWA, so probably had older variants of B747. Plus many US domestic flights with Delta in 1991 and 1992.

And based on number of flights, the aircraft on which I’ve done the most trips is the Fokker 50, followed by the BAE146 (in its various designations) then the Embraer E190. Who’d have guessed, for someone living near London City.

Not too many

Boeing 777’s
Boeing 747-400

Then I went on Swissair and Swiss as a kid so am thinking maybe an a330 or even an md11. Probably the Airbus though. I remember the wings seeming to move more as in the flaps and stuff compared to later flights on the Boeings.
