What if, we took locomotive nicknames literally? Harriet at work destroying some documents, quite a popular thing to do at the moment.

Any Rats in the office's kitchen? Might have left droppings in the corner next to the Hoover; or maybe on the worktop near the EggTimer or the sharp Chopper. Hopefully the Shredder does the job; I'd hate it to be a Duff one.

My Gemini is getting very sensitive. Not happy with Skoda branding:

It also would not let me have Dave and Harriet in Spice Girls or 5ive t-shirts so they are maintaing their edge by looking at Class 86.

No arguments from me there. However, I really wanted to try for the opposite.

Class 91s know where to refuel:

What if the mighty George Stephenson was ever farther ahead than we thought?
Isn't it cheating to use a time-travelling car?

I notice Stephenson envisaged the HST with blue carriages. Possibly already throwing forward to the second life as a Blue Pullman?

Imagine the Rainhill Trials, if that de Lorean streaked past Rocket at 88nph - and then...
Ah I see it now.

The Delorean wins the Rainhill Trials. The government look to commission a fleet of Deloreans to operate on the highly important Manchester to Liverpool flows. A series of Victorian Quango's investigate the situation and conclude that the line should serve Stockton and Darlington. Stephenson returns to his shed thinking that his rocket was really the winner. Whilst staring at his posters, Stephenson realises that the rocket was incorrectly being powered by coal. He needed something cleaner.

Meanwhile, the government Delorean project was hitting further snags. Supply chain problems from America were plaguing construction and it was becoming increasingly obvious that the assembly plant in Horwich was nothing but a sham. There was trouble at the mill, and that was all that saved the transport minister. The Delorean project would never get beyond a small trial in the newly constructed channel tunnel.

Back in his shed, Stephenson once again dusted his rocket down. He had a plan. Armadillo juice. Technically Armadillo juice is actually just electricity produced from the static of the armadillo shells rubbing together. However, everyone knows that you make more money when you call something 'juice". Stephenson was ahead of his time in that regard too. West Oxfordshire Council said yes and Whitney became the centre of the rail universe.

With the luddite rebellion safely quashed, the powers that weren't focused their efforts on a rapid retreat. Stephenson fixed it for them to have a high speed train to escape on. It had taken an age to arrive, but when it did the blue coaches merged perfectly with the Tories new found love of the sea. Happy times.

They all lived happily ever after. Except for the Delorean which was condemned to Hollywood.

Genius @Topological all true of course. Well apart from: "...Whitney became the centre of the rail universe".
- Whitney was the centre of Houston.
- Preston was the centre of the rail universe and everything.
- Witney had to wait for buses to be invented, before Oxford even noticed it.
;)

Those poor Rainhill judges: one moment, the silver futuristic vehicle passes all the contestants - next moment, flash and ne'er but two streaks of flame.
How do you award the prize to something that isn't there?

I would claim that I had done it deliberately to highlight inconsistencies in the planning of West Oxfordshire Council. However, there is a potential association with a former motoring show and I do not take my humour second hand. It was in fact simply an error born of having got up before 03:30 to be on 1W11.

In honour of the Transport for Wales Mk4 sets of the type that brought me to Manchester yesterday, here is a picture that will resonate with anyone on the Mk4 thread.

This what if includes the carriages being painted. The real ones are still in Virgin Trains East Coast grime, or Grand Central Blackpool Failure black.

Crumbs, I thought my 4:45-5:00am starts* were bad enough.

LIttle-known, is Whitney's "Ode To Motoring Show That Shall Not Be Named In Case It Offends", was recorded on board a Sprinter bound for Boston, Lincs.
Sound quality was poor, owing to that 156's engine's droning within the accessible lavatory; and a succession of impatient knocks from a long queue of desperate passengers. Near the end of her song, we hear Whitney's plaintive wail "And IIIIIIIIII Will Always Looooov- whaddaya mean, Lincoln-sheere?"

* Four years of 07:07** Euston to Manchester Piccadilly, nigh-weekly; then - at a different company - three years of weekly drive from south coast to Nottingham and the return drive after work.

** One hour to get from Zone 3 (King George V DLR) to Zone 1 (Euston); then 2 hours on the dot to Piccadilly. That non-stop service flew.

I am glad you were able to shed more light on the story of Whitney Houston and the song "I will always love you".

Not many people actually know that Earth Song was launched into a chart battle with Whitney because of the Lincolnshire incident. The repetitive "What about us?" in Earth song are direct quotes from the people in the queue on that 156. I do not think that many people were that happy about Michael Jackson singing on the train either. One resourceful farmer was noted to remark that she would give Jacko "Peace".

The opening verse of Earth Song was written about Jacko's journey to Chester Zoo (prompting the later "What about the elephants?" line because the elephant house was closed). Here we see the TfW 150/2 passing the very spot where Jacko realised that not only do we have sunrise and rain, but that the 150/2 would one day become the Marches service's gain.

What if train crew and the BTP actually took action against those who disrespect the rules of the quiet coach?

And that chart battle became a three-way queue, when John Lydon (one of those in the 156 lavatory long queue that day) vented his Rotten spleen by re-releasing Pretty Vacant in the following week:

There's no point in asking, you'll get no reply,
Oh just remember you're more desperate than I.
I got no reason to go before you,
You'll always find a massive queue, when you
Need the loo.

Oh it's still busy,
Oh occupied -
Not vacant.
Oh it's still Whitney
Locked inside -
Not vacant

The only positive thing about all of this is that everything ends up on the track(s). In these days of retention tank toilets it would all be so different.

This image asks "What if there were sufficiently large retention tanks on trains?"

I am liking this driver for a fiver idea. Hopefully they all have better route learning than to send a TfW Marches set to Darlington. I do notice that Gemini tried to cover up the error by suggesting Platform 3 is for trains to Cardiff Queen Street.

What if Ilfracombe had never closed. OK so its not actually Ilfracombe station, AI played hard to get on that. However, a mid-week break is just what the doctor ordered, and the sun did shine today! Go and unpack and off to the Admiral Collingwood for tea and refreshment. Ramsgate Dark Conspiracy on tonight.

After writing my composition-description for this month's Realistic AI Railway Images theme (resulting image linked), Gemini first gave me a Desiro 450 in ficticious - but a very awesome-looking - livery. SWR's blue / white real scheme looks bland by comparison!
