I've heard a suggestion (which may or may not be true) being that most Doncaster-Leeds services will be operated by 333s once the new CAF EMUs are in service and also that one of the 3 car CAF EMUs might operate a Adwick-Doncaster shuttle service. This made me think there are probably hundreds of posts on this forum complaining about DMUs running to Hazel Grove but I don't think I've seen any complaints about DMUs under the wires between Adwick and Doncaster. Why is this?
The Adwick trains from Doncaster form part of a through Sheffield to Adwick service to meet the requirements of SYPTE. Many daytime services carry quite a few passengers across Doncaster. The trains run to Adwick because it is the last station in South Yorkshire and has turn back facilities (even if these block the Adwick to Stainforth line for a while each hour). Scunthorpe to Sheffield services also run through Doncaster for the same reasons.
Now ideally the stoppers between Sheffield and Doncaster would run into platform 5 at Doncaster and terminate. Then Adwick services could use platform 6 or 7; and Scunthorpe stoppers would terminate in platform 0, like the Hull stoppers will. Platform 0 is on the east side and terminating trains do not block platforms 1 or 3. Similarly platforms 4 and 8 would be freed up by splitting this group of services at Doncaster.
Adwick stoppers would, of course be much better if they became a Leeds - Doncaster electric stopping service on the alternative half hour to the existing Doncaster - Leeds stoppers. However, I think it unlikely that the PTEs (WY & SY) would agree to this.
Platform 0 is due to open for Christmas, but there is a great deal of work to be done yet, in particular the lifts and bridge connecting platform 0 with platform 1 and the rest of the station.
