Hi all was just after some advise. I failed the online assessment for a conductor job at york (northern) a few weeks ago and about 2 days later a job came up at hull for conductor (northern) I went for it and it actually asked if I have taken any online assessments and applied for jobs which I clicked yes to thinking I'd get an instant rejection. But yesterday I got an email for another online assessment I was wondering if there is any point because it's not been 6 months would I get rejected even if I was to pass?? And another thing a job has come up for train driver in hull (northern) which I have applied for and was wondering if that would get affected by my conductor failure/current live app for conductor?

Hey, I think your best option would be to give HR a call and explain the situation.

I’m not sure if the conductor role works the same way as the driver role but if it does then you wouldn’t be able to sit the assessment so soon. If it’s different testing then I would assume it wouldn’t effect the driver application but like I said, give HR a call and they will be happy to tell you for sure where you stand. Better to do it before wasting any time going to sit assessments again if they won’t be valid.

Thanks for the advise I'll see if I have time on my break to ring I only applied because for the York roll theres no question at all but for the hull theres loads of boxes to tick and 2 questions wierd how it's so different at 2 different stations but same toc I'm worried itll ruin my drivers app as it's pretty much the same as conductor but if what I read is correct you dont do these online assessments for the driver roll?? Will have to see thanks again

There are some online assessments for the driver role but I don’t think they would be the same as the conductor because I would assume you need a different (although similar) skill set? Best thing to do would be to call them, fingers crossed you’re driver application is ok

It does, but it doesn’t help in this instance. Spelling ‘advice’ correctly is probably quite low on the agenda at the moment and isn’t really worth a post to correct at this stage.

It's cool my spelling is bad when I'm on line (grammar to) I dont re read much but when I apply I do try, and get some one else to recheck couldnt get hold of any one yesterday hopefully I will have better luck today

There's a massive difference between applying for a job, when I'd agree that it is important to get it right, and writing a few comments on a site like this.

While I don't aim to have spelling mistakes and typos in my comments on sites like this, I'm not going to proof read it a hundred times unlike a job application which I'll go over with a fine tooth comb.

I can only speak for my own experience but I applied for a trainee conductors job with Northern in April. I didn't even get as far as the online test as I failed the initial paper sift. The rejection e-mail did state I couldn't reapply for any further trainee conductors roles in the next six months with Northern.

I would say in your situation if the same jobs are with Northern then you need to be honest and give HR a bell. From what I gather I can still apply for other non conductor jobs with Northern or even any trainee conductors jobs with another TOC and I presume this will apply to you too.

As long as you are completely open and honest with them it'll work out okay in the long run.

I emailed them but looks like itll be to late, I'm not to bothered about the conductor one as I wont pass the online assessment I'm just more concerned about the driver job, i have no chance to phone at all.

It's all so confusing i have seen people say yes and no to reaplying with in a certain time weather you havnt passed the sift or if you got to the assessment stage. I have still got my rejection email from the York conductor job and it doesn't say any where about not being allowed to apply with in 6 months and that's why I applied for hull. I dont even know how I even passed the sift as I have put way less effort in it then the driver post

Well finally got a reply to my email and has answered what I have always wanted to know

They said

Dear Keith ,

Thank you for getting in touch with the HR Contact Centre. We have reviewed your query and can confirm the following solution:

Thank you for your email.

The 6 months is only applicable if you have had an interview with Northern and not been successful. We would not interview anyone within this six month period again.

This does not affect your applications if you have not been successful to interview stage.

If you have already successfully completed the online assessment within 6 months then you will not have to re-take these again.

That's actually quite surprising - I didn't get passed the paper sift for the trainee conductor role with Northern back in April and I definitely had an e-mail explaining I had not been successful and I could NOT re-apply for the conductor role for another six months. As it was five and a half months ago I can't say it really matters now!!!
