I have recently been through the recruitment process for a trainee train driver.

I passed all the assessments, however didn’t get the job. The last stage was the DMI and there must have been people better suited than myself. I enjoyed the process and found the assessments relatively easy so feel it’s a job I could do, however I am well aware of how many people want to do it, so it’s not easy!

My questions is, having passed the assessments, I’ve heard they are valid between 2 and 5 years depending on the TOC. Is it worth writing to TOC’s close by with my details explaining I’ve passed, or would this be a waste of time. I understand the recruitment processes are quite set in stone, so I’m thinking it may be a waste of time but it would be good to have someone’s point of view from within the industry.

Definitely! I passed the tests last year with the FOC I currently work for, and was placed in a waiting pool, waiting to be placed on a course. unfortunately over a year later, I was still waiting. So I applied elsewhere, and I start in 5 weeks time. Having passed the tests already, in my opinion definitely gives you an edge in the recruitment processes.

I don’t think writing to them will necessarily help. However, I strongly advise applying to any who are recruiting and make it clear you’ve passed the psychometric assessments when you do so. You’ll get differing views on whether it’s easier to get a job with the passes under your belt, but it’s worked for me and I’m sure you’re more desirable having passed them. Good luck!
