Advice re upcoming trip with disabled father

Hi there I was wondering if anyone can provide advice / reassurance.

On Thursday I am taking my father on a day out to ride the Settle to Carlisle train for his 70th birthday present. This will be his first trip in 10 years, and his first being in a wheelchair.

We will be travelling from Redcar Central and more than likely travel up to Newcastle and then across the Tyne Valley for Carlisle before taking the s & c to Leeds, then back to Middlesbrough.

I understand that Passenger Assist is good website to use to arrange assistance (wheel chair and ramps, ensuring we get to right platforms etc).

I have looked at some ranger tickets (North East Round Robin), but time restrictions would be too tight, so will probably buy Anytime to Newcastle and use advances (with disabled railcard) the rest of the way - observing all the minimum connection times and more.

I haven't looked at doing this journey the other way round from Leeds.

So this leads up to some daft question that I need to ask:

1) When booking the assistance as my tickets will already be booked, would it be possible to arrange help despite the number of spilt advances we have

2) On a Northern 158 (normally on the S & C from my observation at Carlisle. Does the wheelchair space allow the user to have a view out of the window?

3) Any recommendations for a decent quick lunch/snack at Carlisle?

Can't help re assistance, but the wheelchair space on a northern 158 is in the centre of the train and is two normal seats with a pull up table fixed to the wall and space for a wheelchair. IMHO, sat in those seats your father would have a better view than you!

I've never had a problem with the chip shop across from Carlisle station either.

I suggest looking at the journey going Leeds-Carlisle-Newcastle- trains run later over the Hexham line so it would probably make things easier for you, it would then probably allow you to use the North East Round Robin ticket, which would avoid problems with advances in the event of disruption and work out cheaper. I've always done it Leeds-Carlisle-Newcastle-Leeds as the timings have worked better.

If you're at around the £60 mark the following ticket may be a better idea and for a similar price covers the whole area you want to travel in for 4 days.

As a return Redcar Darlington plus a Round Robin works out at £36 with a railcard, this strikes me as rather expensive.

I don't see why you shouldn't be able to book all the assistance in one go.
