Good day folks, hope you all had a good Christmas.

I'm considering applying for a Commercial Guard job with SWR in the new year. I applied for the role earlier this year but was unsuccessful and have to wait 6 months before reapplying.

With the strikes going on at SWR is it worth joining as a guard at this time or to avoid altogether?

TIA

I'm not sure if you're in the railway industry already, but I'dm assuming not? But in reply to your question, then yes. Even if they did every get rid of Guards, you'll have a job of some description and the railway is a massive industry, giving you plenty of opportunity to do other things.

Hey Stigy, no I'm not in the railway industry and never have been. I'm currently self employed and looking to go back into employment hopefully on the railway. I remember chatting to you from the Freightliner Trainee Driver Threads  I have until February until I can reapply for a Commercial Guard job with SWR or any Trainee Driver role.

I remember now, haha. Sometimes all the threads blend in to one here. I would definitely apply, as it's a good job with a great salary and pension, irrespective of some of the old school scare mongering you'll likely hear about or receive. How far did you get with Freightliner? Even if you got a Guard job, then applied for driver you'll be in a really good place (an ideal place some might say) to become a trainee driver with SWR (Being an internal applicant as well, means you'd not have to wait for a vacancy to be advertised to apply, they'll assess you anyway and hold you until a course becomes available).

Happy New Year!

I didn't pass the stage one assessments with Freightliner, I did them at the Ibis hotel in Crewe back in August. It also cost me one out of my two attempts for the role. At the same time I put in an application for a Commercial Guard job at Bournemouth but wasn't successful at that either. I'm not going to give up though. Thanks for your advice, happy new year to you :D
