Advice Please (Poynton-Crewe routeing)

This is my first post so please be gentle...

On Saturday I wish to go from Poynton to Cheadle Hulme, break my journey, then go Cheadle Hulme to Crewe, and then return from Crewe to Macclesfield via Kidsgrove.

Would the £10.50 return from Poynton to Crewe be valid for this journey? Some TOC websites say it is, others say there is no valid ticket for the return Crewe-Poynton sector via Kidsgrove?

Breaking the journey isn't a problem, so it's a question of valid routes between Poynton and Crewe.

The shortest route is via Cheadle Hulme and Wilmslow. So that's valid.

To determine if via Kidsgrove is valid, you need to consult the Routeing Guide ( http://www.atoc.org/about-atoc/rail-settlement-plan/routeing-guide ).

Poynton and Crewe share a routeing point: Crewe. So there are no mapped routes.

However a ticket from Adlington (Cheshire) is valid via both routes due to the shortest route rule. A route is considered within the shortest if it is no greater than 3 miles longer than the shortest.

If travelling after 0930, get the Route Kidsgrove CDR and excess half of it to an Any Permitted. The prices are £9.30 and £13.60 respectively, you pay half way between the two. The SOR is more flexible, at £13.70 valid via both routes and outward portion valid for 4 days, return within 1 month.

On the outward you will be starting 'short' at Poynton which is fine, and on the return finishing short at Macclesfield, that's also fine.

In reality I doubt any guard would complain at a Poynton to Crewe being used via Kidsgrove/Stoke (especially as Crewe costs more).
