Hi there. New to the forum and hoping to get a bit of advice/information from anyone who can help.

I am currently going through an application for a trainee train driver with Southern. I have passed the assessment day tests (thankfully :D) and am awaiting further contact about the next stage which is the DMI.

I have today seen a job advert regarding a trainee train driver with GWR at a station much closer to me. Would anyone recommend me applying for this one too, in the event I am unsuccessful with the Southern one, or if I hear back from GWR quicker than Southern as the GWR role would be a lot better location wise.

I wasn't sure if that is even allowed, or whether the different companies would even know I've applied for the other job etc and wouldn't want to risk it ruining the application im already part way through. Also, would anyone know if the tests ive already passed at Southern would mean not having to do them for the GWR role or are they totally different between companies.

Many thanks in advance to anyone that reads this and/or can help.

Hi there and welcome to the forum.

Yes this is completely fine and many people will apply for multiple TOCs. The recruitment teams are separate so they won’t know.

However assessment passes will be shared as this is done centrally. That being said if you progress with Southern, your passes will be valid. It does depend on whether you passed to a national or enhanced standard though.

Thank you very much for the reply.

Assumed it would be ok to apply for similar roles at different TOCs but just wanted to make sure as wouldnt want to jeopardise the one with Southern (even if it does seem to be taking forever between stages haha).

Ah welcome to the world of railway recruitment - things can be very slow! If you use the ‘Search’ function for this forum only you may be able to find the existing thread for the Southern vacancy being discussed.

From my past experience I will say never put all your eggs in one basket.

I once applied for a TOC and made it past the psychometric stage. After finding out I had passed the psychometrics I never heard from the TOC again, I even sent multiple emails for updates.

If you want to get on the railway, apply for every toc you can. That's my two cents anyway.

Yes, apply for as many different positions as you want. They are interviewing more than just you so why wouldn't you be allowed to do the same?
