Advice Needed: Liverpool - Northampton

Travelling from Liverpool Stns to Northampton on Weds 28th Oct. Anybody got any ideas on how to do it cheaply?

I know LM have super off peak tickets, but the restrictions are ridiculous (I can't remember them)

If the LM cheap tickets are no good then Advance Purchase - but you've left it late!

Liverpool to Crewe (Any Permitted) + Crewe-Northampton (LM only) reduces the price from £48 to £36 providing you don't leave Crewe before 0845.

I think with a Railcard you are best off buying the through ticket at £31.70 (route Long Buckby). The excess to go via MKC is £3.10 each way. Splitting at Crewe isn't worth it due to minimum fare restrictions.

You can get a through ticket for £12.00 on trains timed to arrive into Euston after 1300, e.g. the 1154 arrival into Northampton would be valid. If you leave Liverpool after 10am this reduces to £9.90.

You cannot leave Northampton between 1630 and 1930.

The following outward journey would be possible:-

LIV 0834
BHM 1017

BHM 1053
NMP 1154

Ha! I was thinking he'd not get long in Northampton but then I discovered that they are restricted by arrival time into Euston!! And given that the 1053 BHM-EUS is a stopper it takes absolutely ages to get to Euston and is therefore valid. Crazy!

Also, Chris could get the 0904 LIV-BHM which makes the 1053 connection by 6 mins, although it isn't an official connection it should be doable. If missed, arrival at Northampton would be at 1234 though!

The fastest connection is to leave Liverpool at 1004, and change at Stafford (1109 arrive) for the 1121 to Northampton arriving 1242. This is perhaps the best option as it is via a much faster route. The same times 1 hour earlier are not valid as the earlier train is too quick into Euston arriving before 1pm.

If you want to travel at anytime in the morning, then you can change at New St onto a train that terminates at Northampton and there doesn't seem to be any restriction on the Super off-peak ticket. (The restriction is only for trains going into London, not for trains terminating at Northampton)

The off-peak day return is £15.20, and seems to allow travel on any train for this route.

The restriction text I have on NFM03 says

Valid on any London Midland service scheduled to arrive London Midland terminals at or after 1000

But I think it's supposed to say 'London terminals' - that is the restriction that is actually being applied by the websites, which would mean that any LM train from Liverpool is fine.

I thought trains which are shown as "Northampton" join a train from Crewe at Northampton and both go down to Euston.

I think that they do, but the timetable says that they terminate at Northampton, and it is only the train from Crewe that goes to London directly.

They do on Saturdays
