advice needed asap

Good evening all. I was travelling from Didcot Parkway to Swindon on my ALR 1st, at 1955 today, when i was stopped by the ticket conductor, and he said oh need to look at this rover as heard something about them..

Promptly took them out the wallet and writed the ticket number down, i asked why and he said just need to. I said why. once again got i need to. he said thanks very much. and went on to the buffet

When i got off at swindon, starting asking for my surname i said why, he said just asking. i got off and he said nothing wrong with them, just needed to check your ticket number, as a few dodgy rovers going around.

Spoke to Manager at Swindon and he confirmed a ticket machine was taken a few weeks ago. and FGW have a list of numbers or something. thats why i was checked anyone confirm this?

He should have checked the number against the list, and if not on the list left at that
Asking for your name is seriously out of order

The only time I ran into an issue was at Marylebone, the first two customers through the barrier had First Class ALR tickets!
I got served by a different person who didn't recognise the ticket, took my ticket away, then came back, and apologised

I can't say if a machine is missing or not, but if one is, they would send out a brief to staff with the machine and location number, and the last known ticket number. Anyone in posession of a ticket from that machine with a higher number may hold vital information that could lead to the recovery of the machine.

I hadn't heard about a missing machine - presumably an on-board Avantix - but if that's the case then it's likely that somebody has managed to bang out a job lot of seasons/rovers etc and flog them on cheaply. Hence the suspicion. This might have seemed a little worrying to you, but until the TM has confirmation that your ticket is genuine then he'd have to be a bit cagey about it. If you left the station unhindered then I wouldn't worry about it!

But you always get worried when someone ask's you. Espically Surname

I can understand that, but if you have a legit ticket then nothing to worry about

Yep, they secure themselves after a few minutes of idling. But if you were quick enough I suppose you could pinch one that was 'open' if the Guard had just used it.

Besides, isn't there only a limited amount of ticket stock in each one anyway? That way there would be a limit to the potential for losses if one went "walkies".

If memory serves, there are 250 tickets in a "pack" for Avantix.

In addition to the previously mentioned idle lockout, they also have a docking time limit, the same as SPORTIS used to, whereby if they're not docked within <x> hours (configurable by the TOC IIRC) they'll automatically lock themselves and prevent further ticket issue.

well i was speaking to the guard on the train from swindon to cheltenham and apparently one was taken from the desk by the barriers at bristol temple meads ..

i was just a bit shocked when the guard on the swansea train checked it. i only asked the other guard just to get a second opinion.

That doesn't suprise me, they leave 'em sat there for the taking quite often :roll: Though I suspect not any more! As much as they are relatively complicated, the average person could probably work out how to do the basics fairly quickly. Though to be able to knock out Rovers and Seasons etc would take a bit of fiddling about - or a bit of insider knowledge of course....

It isn't the first time one has gone walkabouts, I recall pager messages in the past informing that they have gone missing from onboard. A very bad day for the staff member who lost it :cry:

Oh dear. Last legit. user = First suspect?

I'm suprised that there isn't a GPS tracker onboard which could be used to track it down; after all most smartphones have them and they're pretty small - in fact most mobile phones of any description have some GPS capability!

It would appear that the above incident could have been handled better by the staff concerned.



I know of a case where a bus caught fire after the fire was out the bus was left for the recovery truck to come , unfortunatley the crew forgot to take the ticket machine off before leaving it.

The machine was recovered by person(s) unknown who used it to knock out lots of weekly bus passes .

Not again, will this guy ever leave the railways alone (if i remember correctly he is currently banned from railway property).

I know exactly who your talking about and if it is him this will be the 3rd or 4th time he has done something like this some people never learn.

Surely then this time he should be sent down
