I am on the Chieftain which has broken down with a brake fault North of Doncaster. I was going to Kings Cross and then across to Euston for the sleeper. I think I will now miss the sleeper. If I get off in Doncaster what is the best way to intercept it at Crewe or Preston? I have an ALR.

A quick reply off the top of my head would be Cross Country to Derby, but not sure if they still run through Donny, So id get the first train to Sheffield, then Cross Country/EMT to Derby, them EMT to Crewe. The sleeper is not usually in Crewe until about 23.30 but can get full times for you shortly.

--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

Cross Country
18:52 Doncaster [DON] Derby [DBY] 19:52 1h 00m
Platform 4

EMT
20:40 Derby [DBY] Crewe [CRE] 22:04 1h 24m
Platform 5 usually
This is the last train from Derby to Crewe tonight.

Sleeper leaves Crewe at 23.54.

I think Crewe will be easier. If I were you, I'd ring FSR and tell them first, as otherwise they may sell your berth :)

I am going to miss the 18.52 from Doncaster. Is that the last option for today to intercept the sleeper.

If you miss the connection at Stockport, there is the following, which is the last chance to get to Crewe from Stockport
21:44 Stockport [SPT] Crewe [CRE] 22:11 0h 27m

The last train that connects to the Caledonian Sleeper is this:

2038 Doncaster - York 2101
2110 York - Manchester Piccadilly 2233
2246 Manchester Piccadilly - Preston 2333

As XC 18.52 from Don is delayed at York, best advice is to head for Manchester via either Leeds or Sheffield and thence to Crewe ( or if you are hours late you can choose to go to Preston). XC have cancelled loads of trains.

Thanks very much everyone for all the options. We still havent moved and the engineer who has been here for half hour hasnt managed to fix it yet.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Train declared failed. Rescue loco en route. Will hopefully make it for last connection. Not sure where rescue loco is coming from though.

You should certainly have no problems getting compensation for that delay. A train failure is definitely within the control of the railway.

1942 Donny - Manchester is just a few minutes late, and due into Platform 3B at Donny. Go to the rear of the train for a decent seat (although I doubt it'll be busy at that time!) if it's a 185 and you want to charge laptop/phones etc then sit in a table seat.

There are then options for Crewe/Preston.

The 1742 lost 37 minutes between Donny and Stockport, but the 1842 didn't do so badly and only lost 11 minutes, it looks like it was diverted via Tinsley as it did not call at Meadowhall and did not report between Aldwark Jn and Sheffield. So could be some rare track for you!!

As MCR247 has stated I now think you have to travel via York.

2022 Doncaster - York 2046 - From Plat 8 - Currently On Time

2110 York - Manchester Piccadilly 2233

2246 Manchester Piccadilly - Preston 2333

Sounds like you missed the 1942! The Chieftain is showing as cancelled from Edinburgh, let alone Doncaster. Did you change trains at Edinburgh? Are you still north of Doncaster?

The last train to arrive at DON from YRK was 1V92 1522 NCL-RDG, which got to DON at 1657. The first train shown to experience a delay was 1A39 1555 NCL-KGX, which left YRK at 1748 and hasn't arrived at DON yet!

Rescue loco is here. But apparently will take 20 mins to couple and we are 15 mins or more from Doncaster. So I will miss the last connection for the sleeper. So what should I do? Will the train company pay for a taxi to Crewe or Preston or somewhere else?

Difficult to say. Where would you say your journey is from/to? I've been in that situation before (double backing between NCL & CAR - pretty much what you are doing Edinburgh-London & back) I missed the 'connection' with the train going the other way, and I've not been willing to use the 'document transfer' excuse (lol!) nor admit "I am just travelling for the sake of travelling".

Where did you plan to get the sleeper to?

If you are based in York, my suggestion is to go back to York and stay the night in York, and then resume your travels the next day.

Well IF they did pay for a taxi, google says from Stn to stn it should take 1h45, but with snow and traffic, I'd say you *might* be able to do it in around 2h30, which may just mean you make it?

Is that Donny-Crewe? Given the weather at the moment I would strongly advise against a taxi, especially doing a route the taxi driver would not be very familiar with.

I am not sure a taxi can be justified either, especially if you are from York, and the failure occurs near York (with ample opportunity to get back to York) and doing a journey Edinburgh-Edinburgh via London.

Looks like they've swapped the train IDs around, the Chieftain is showing as 1E15 1150 GLC-KGX starting at EDB at 1401. This train left YRK at 1722, and got stuck between Temple Hirst and Shaftholme Junctions. It has just arrived in DON now at 2041!

Your best bet is probably 2054 DON - LDS (due 2134).

Then, if you are lucky, 2140 LDS - MAN (platform 16A at Leeds) due 2233.
If not, the 2208 gets to MAN 2305.

The train you need to be on is due to leave MAN at 2246, however the 0016 has a connection of -10 at Preston but the sleeper may be delayed so it's a possibility.

Edit: 2054 left DON 4 mins late. Are you on it? You're due into platform 8. I suggest you walk through the train to the very front before Leeds, so you are nearest the footbridge to make your way to platform 16.

Now the 2140 Leeds - Manchester is now showing as delayed near Northallerton.

How is your progress? The train in front of you (2038 DON - LDS Northern service) is showing as delayed although the EC train before that got through with no problems. Hope you don't get stuck behind that!
