I can't believe we're having such a big dispute over adverts!

The last time I checked, they didn't jump out and savagely kill anybody, so leave them alone and get on with using the forum!

Sorry to jump to the end of this thread without reading it in full, but if this site is using Google AdSense, then it almost certainly includes other services acquired by Google, including DoubleClick.

Some ads served will be context based ones, chosen on account of the content of the page itself (so related to the subject, or keywords picked out from the web page).

Other ads will be served using cookies on YOUR machine, stored by companies that advertise using DoubleClick - like Amazon and many others. This does mean you'll now get some ads that are very relevant to you and ONLY you. This might be a particular product you searched for, with the obvious thinking being that you're more likely to click on something you actually looked for!

I am against ad blockers, as ads support these forums. I'd rather have the odd advert that is of interest to me, and clicked, than be asked to make a donation or subscribe. The rest of the ads I simply ignore.

The adverts can be quite useful, I was looking something up the other day, had dinner so closed laptop down. I then completely forgot what I was looking at, fortunately this forum remembered, and i had an advert for the exact thing.
Another forum I use, you can pay a Tenner a year, which gives access to a members lounge, where general conversation can happen unmodified and also removes all adverts. Perhaps an idea for this site.

That's a good explanation, thanks very much. I'd never heard of double click, though I knew of Adsense. I now see why I sometimes notice that ads are very relevant to my seacrhes and soemtimes not! I did notice that a Stena ad appeared when I was reading the Stranraer thread, in which the word apepared quite a few times!

I live nearby, but no matter how hard they try I'm never getting on another ATR unless I absolutely have to... sorry Aurigny!
