The income from the adverts pays for the hosting of the forum so we would prefer if you didn't block the adverts.

They are the whole basis that allow the forum to exist. No adverts = no income = no money for servers etc = no forum. The only way around that would to be go around asking for donations or for the staff to pay up themselves!

Also, am I the only one who is never particularly bothered by the adverts? One banner at the top and bottom on the page and none on the Index is quite good!

They now have the added attraction of enabling this particular thread to exist, so members can post information on the types of adverts that they are receiving. I have received different adverts every day and am currently receiving SmartEnergy, N-able and FindaProperty.com from just the first two sub-forums I visited this morning.

I have AdBlock (in Google Chrome) - an absolutely wonderful little tool that blocks all advertisements, and even allows me to "edit out" certain sections of websites. I have a customised NRE home page! (Picture attached)

It won't be such a wonderful tool when websites you like the most close down because of their failure to sustain the costs of providing the service. Using advert blockers on independent websites like this is wrong and it is not unreasonable to ask that users put up with the reasonable number of adverts here if they wish to use this service.

I never click on website adverts - ever - so whether I can view them or not does not affect the amount of revenue a website gets.

I'm not advocating that other people use the extension, however it is currently used by well over 1 million Google Chrome users. Internet Explorer users - the "dumb ones" - still form a very significant part of the market (much more so than Google Chrome users), and they currently have no way of blocking web advertisements (as far as I am aware).

This is totally incorrect, you should leave the adverts in place so it has the page impression counted.

Of course you never click on adverts, you don't have any to click on! If you had it enabled do you have some kind of allergy to clicking on adverts? I doubt this, so you may actually end off clicking on something if it catches your eye.

You are also wrong to say that Internet Explorer is ''a very significant part of the market.'' Only 35% of visitors use this browser. Regardless of this, you are consuming a service which costs a lot of money to provide, yet you are being selfish and not giving anything back in return.

Whatever the case, perhaps I do have an allergy to adverts, because I never click on them. If I ever want a particular product or service, I will look for it specially and compare prices, which is why I ignore all adverts, even those that might appear to be "relevant."

EDIT: I am "forced" (:roll to use IE at many other locations outside of my home, and no, I still don't click on adverts.

I would pay a reasonable subscription fee to avoid advertisements on this website. The only reason why I consider it worthwhile to pay the BBC TV license is to avoid advertisements!

The internet is full of message boards with only a few posters. To be a successful and interesting forum you need people to post.

1/3 is still a very large part of the market, and it's users are, in my opinion, the type of people who are most likely to click on advertisements.

Could you please confirm whether this forum gets a few pence for advertisements to simply load on a webpage, or whether it only gets paid when an advertisement is clicked? I would be interested to know.

I would be inclined to agree with that.

I also reckon (unless I could be proved otherwise by some meaningful statistics) that the majority of people who actually click adverts on this forum are visitors, rather than members.

Well, I am a member of Airliners.net (aviation version of RailUK, although it is global), and that has a £12 fee to join, and you still get a few adverts. It has 133,140 members. You can also pay a monthly fee to remove the adverts and get a few bonus features.

So, perhaps people will pay if the forum is good? Or are rail enthusiasts more stingy?

How do you cope with billboards, TV adverts and so on? These consume much more of one's attention then a small flash banner!

It's great that this site is free, it isn't always that way (see above).

I only watch the BBC, I always read a book on the tube, and I don't live near any billboards, so I'm quite happy! Billboards are horrible things, as they make areas look run down - they should be banned...
