Advertising on Trains

Folks,
was wondering if this could ever be possible or even a market for it.Everytime l see buses or taxis in the City Centre they are advertising some form of product on the door of the taxi cab or at rear of the bus.

Got me thinking,keep hearing how the network has limited funds.l know it would not raise mega money through this venture however the funds generated could maybe enhance stations,maybe even create jobs.

Up here the Tyne and Wear Metro has been doing this for some time - one way of lowering costs. Northern have quite a few adverts on their trains, but normally they are advertising their own services or PTE products.

Most/All the taxis outside the local 'spoon's (the square peg if anyone is interested) have Chiltern advertised on them

I've not seen many NR ads though although I've also not been looking. Of those I do see it's often explaining what and why engineering works are taking place this weekend/bank holiday

I see ads on LM's 323s mainly for either UCE, Birmingham Uni or Cadbury World (and they used to have ads on the tv sets iirc).

All Over Body Wraps

It is sometimes a franchise condition that trains stick to an approved livery for a lot of TOCs, and using it for external advertising is usually prohibited. I imagine the DfT/PTE, ROSCO and SMT within the TOC would have to all be happy with it. Any advertising livery has to meet the DDA requirements of contrast colours on doors. Network Rail may even have to be consulted over "warning" colours etc...

I know this applies to Merseyrail, wherin the PTE (effectively the franchise "manager") has to give written permission for any alterations to the "approved livery". Capital of Culture was the last "alteration" approved, although that wasn't commercial.

I believe a vinyl wrap is being prepared for Liverpool ONE shopping centre, but how far that will get with the PTE I couldn't say...

Wales and West had a couple of 158s in all over advertising. There may have been others but The Western Mail and Ginsters Pasties are the two I remember. You could certainly still see the Ginsters transfers which had been applied to the roof last year although the set had been repainted into standard livery some time ago.

These days with super-thin bendable/pliable LED displays, it's kind-of surprising that nobody has wrapped a coach with them.

The railway is the last bastion of public transport, generally not destroyed by stupid contravision vinyl wrap.

NXEAs Stansted Express and BAAs Heathrow Express are a start of a bad trend that makes trains look awful and should go no further.

If it does spread to other operators, I would welcome further sustained vandal attacks on trains to cover up junk like Tampon adverts anyday.

Have you seen SBB's Re460's - a lot of those are ad boards...

OTOH I really like the four overall advertising 365s that WAGN did, which have retained their vinyls to this day. I think that they're very classy and much more interesting than the current FCC livery.

They have a few like that up here advertising different companies. Newcastle airport, The great north forest, The nexus pop card, Franks drugs line there do also have internal advertising inside there trains as well as at stations So i would imagine this brings in some extra revenue to the system

Not entirely sure how much it does bring in, but must have been going down since the recession. One poster at Mounument had been there since Christmas, and hadn't been replaced. Was even told that CBS (who do the adverts) wouldn't put any in at Brockley Whins, leaving the displays blank.

Eh? they're all white. they've got almost no branding whatsoever. Even the orginal NXEA livery (with the silver bits) was pretty plain, and before that the One liveries weren't advertising wraps. What on earth are you talking about here?

Some of the SBB locos look incredible, and are nicely replicated in miniature form by model railway manufacturers. Picking up on the Swiss theme, the Class 319 in Swiss Tourist Board livery looks rather nice, but is spoilt by the green Southern cabs. I certainly prefer seeing it on Thameslink route than the horrid FCC livery.

The Continental Airlines advertising liveries suited the 465s better than the 460s, and if I remember correctly the HEx 332s are limited to one carriage of advertising.

The worst advertising livery had to be the old WAGN 315 'Intalink' livery - all-over dirty white with horrid yellow and green arrows, closely followed by the Class 118 in British Telecom yellow.

Didn't there used to be a 117 unit in the 80s running round rural Devon all in yellow advertising British Telecom? I wonder how many cows were influenced by the train to change their telecoms provider...

Why aren't there more adverts inside trains along the lines of the tube ones? Extra revenue without despoiling the externals.

FGW did have advertisements on the back of reservation labels for a period. They were for T-Mobile, so pink and actually fitted in really well with the coaches.
