Advanced timed single ticket

I have searched but couldn’t find an answer to this specifically.

Very briefly in a few weeks time I have an advanced timed single ticket but now I will have to break my journey for about two hours then carry on to my main destination.

I’ve looked at restrictions for this ticket but there is no info on this, can I break my journey or will I need to just break my journey then buy another ticket to travel onwards later in the day? Thanks.

There is no such thing as an “advanced timed single ticket” - what ticket type is it? Advance, Off Peak, or Anytime? Advance tickets are booked train only and by nature do not permit break of journey. It will help if you also tell us the planned journey.

As per the T&Cs for Advance tickets, you are not supposed to break your journey at all.

If you were to share the intended journey, then we might be able to advise if there was nonetheless any chance of 'getting away' with breaking the journey - simplest example being if the mid-point is London and you need to change stations.

More generally if you had to change trains and did a break of journey there. The second half of the trip would have to be without a seat or counted place reservation to make this work.

Re a journey with a cross-London transfer, even if the second half has a reservation then it could still just be abandoned (so a new ticket would need to be purchased).

The journey is Clapham Junction to Angmering but now need to break at Portslade after making the original purchase.

It won’t be a big issue to purchase an additional ticket from Portslade if I have to as I just need to stay within ‘the rules’

To "stay within the rules", you really need to travel.on your booked train between Clapham Junction and Angmering. There are barriers at Portslade and you don't have a ticket which is valid for breaking or resuming your journey there, this is why the ticket was so cheap, but it does come with conditions

Reckon what you could do is to travel as booked to Angmering, then double back to Portslade, before returning to Angmering later, but this will cost you the price of an Off Peak Day Return between the two.

Thanks for all the above advice, when I clicked on restrictions when booked all I got was as I’ve screenshot attached but I should probably looked at full T&Cs as per @Joe Paxton posted.

One of the downfalls of buying advanced of course although getting a good price if plans change as in life they can it throws things out.

Reckon what you could do is to travel as booked to Angmering, then double back to Portslade, before returning to Angmering later, but this will cost you the price of an Off Peak Day Return between the two.

It's fine to not travel from Portslade-Amgmering-Portslade. If you buy an Off-Peak Day Return from Angmering to Portslade you can alight at Portslade from your original train and use the Outward portion of your off-peak ticket to exit the station. This is within the rules as long as you don't use this part of the ticket again, which you won't.

Then, later in the day, use the Return portion of your Off Peak Return to complete your journey from Portslade to Angmering.

To avoid any complications it might be worth buying a paper ticket for the off-peak day Return, but this isn't absolutely necessary as what you would do here is completely legal and within the rules.

Sorry I’ve used the word ‘timed’ as having to be on a specific train as quoted on the ticket, chosen when booking from a range of departures at differing prices. It’s an Advance Single.
