Yesterday i bought an advanced ticket for a journey from Whaley Bridge to Adlington(C) on the Northern Rail app for £6.50.
Today my phone ran out of power so I went to the ticket office. The clerk said that he couldn't sell me an advance, only an anytime at a cost £13.30. He reduced this to £9.70 by splitting at Disley.

But why couldn't he sell me the advanced? Was it because it was only five minutes before the train was due? I checked with the TVM and that was offering advances.

Northern ticket offices no longer sell "on the day" advance tickets, I believe. They can, however, be purchased from Northern TVMs.

Discussed here...

Extract...
That this House notes with concern that Northern Trains has recently withdrawn Advance Purchase on Departure rail fares from sale at its ticket offices; understands that advanced purchase tickets are designed to offer best value fares to passengers; therefore believes that the withdrawal of Advance Purchase on Departure fares may mean that passengers are not able to access the best value fare for their journey;

I think Northern recently stopped selling on-the-day Advances from ticket windows.

Thank you. But why didn't the clerk advice me me use the TVM? Proponents of keeping tickets offices always say that the advioe from the clerk is invaluable in getting you the best deal
