Advanced tickets and missed connections.

Further to a previous post I made regarding a trip to Pembroke Dock on the Summer Saturday HST from Bristol Parkway.

I've now booked the relevant advance tickets, I've booked a Nuneaton - Bristol Parkway and a separate BPW - PMD tickets travelling in first class (£12 each way). Whilst the connections going out seem quite decent, the return trip sees an arrival into BPW at 19:00, with my train to Birmingham being at 19:10.

Question is, if for some reason, the train from PMD arrives late at BPW, and I miss the 19:10 departure, would I still be able to use the tickets on the following train which I think is about half an hour later?, even though my ticket for CrossCountry starts at BPW on the 19:10 service?.

Yes you may.

This happened to me last year, coincidentally, and the guard on the 1940 didn’t bat an eyelid.

The National Rail Conditions of Travel tell us:

9.4. Where you are using a Ticket valid on a specific train service or train services (such as an ‘advance’ Ticket) and you miss a service because a previous connecting train service was delayed, you will be able to travel on the next train service provided by the Train Company with whom you were booked without penalty.

Since (assuming the day you're travelling on has the same service as 11 August, an arbitrary summer Saturday that I chose to check times) both the 1910 and 1940 trains from Bristol Parkway to Birmingham New Street are operated by Cross Country, you shouldn't have a problem.

Yes. If that happens, show both your Pembroke - Bristol and Bristol - Nuneaton tickets together. If you want additional reassurance, you may wish to print out your Pembroke - Nuneaton itinerary showing the 10-minute connection at Bristol Parkway, and carry that with you on the journey. The itinerary is seldom required.

The minimum connection time at Bristol Parkway is 7 minutes.
