Why can't I buy tickets for a rail journey in august via the train line. Are they not on sale?

Advance tickets usually only available from about 3 months before travel.

By way of exception, you can on the Virgin Trains East Coast website also buy Advance tickets for weekdays (not weekends or bank holidays) 12 to 24 weeks ahead, but only for journeys on VTEC train services. Of course, that's only of use if you want to travel on a VTEC train. And even 24 weeks ahead only currently gets you to a date in late July.

Note - use the above tool, but don't actually book using The Trainline as they levy an easily avoidable booking fee. Book your ticket using one of the train company websites. (The Trainline does not have access to cheaper tickets than are available elsewhere.)

Be aware that the earliest tickets to appear 'in advance' may not be 'Advance' tickets. Don't buy a walk-up ticket (ie off peak or anytime) by mistake if you want a cheaper (but 'booked train only') Advance ticket.

I apologise if that was too obvious, but some people do get confused between any old 'advanced tickets' (best not to call them that) and the particular type of ticket called 'Advance'.

Anytime Single £13.20
Off Peak Return £21.50
Anytime Return £26.20
1st Class Off Peak Return £69.90

you can buy these tickets in advance but they won't be any cheaper than buying at the station on the day.

I wouldn't purchase through the Trainline either as they add booking fees. Use a train operating company website if you want to buy online as they don't charge booking fees.

Allow me to guess, you are heading to Warminster to catch a 23A bus

Just don't book via the Trainline to avoid those fees
