Advance tickets & connecting trains

Dear all,

I'd like to go from Birmingham Intl to Cheltenham Spa on an advance ticket. This itinerary is:

12:46 Birmingham International -> 13:01 Birmingham New Street Reserved - no seat allocated * London Midland

13:17 Birmingham New Street -> 13:57 Cheltenham Spa Coach D, Seat 24A (Window) Crosscountry

May I use an earlier train to BHM? As I learnt from the FAQ I may take a train which offers no reservations (unfortunately only one per hour). So as I don't have a reservation on the connecting train, which offers reservations, I may take any other connecting train?!?

The rules say you may take "appropriate" connecting trains, not "any" connecting trains.

This question crops up regularly, here's some recent threads:

You are allowed to take "appropriate" connecting trains, but the policy of the rail industry (which is not made clear in the T&Cs) is that you shouldn't take a reserveable train, though some Train Companies officially have exceptions, and in any case, common sense is nearly always applied.
