Okay, how about the advance holder hasn't even got on the train at all?

There's loads of reasons why seats can appear reserved when there's nobody actually using them, and unless the guard goes through after each station removing reservations where nobody's in the seat, you'll still have the problem of people not wanting to sit in them in case they just get turfed out again.

And they have to be careful - I've got on a train at the station I'd reserved from to find my reservation had already been removed by such a guard. Fortunately it was a quiet train by that point.

I must admit, if it's a quiet train they might get removed before the last stop...

Same here on a FTPE service towards Barrow where I had a seat reservation from an advance ticket from Lancaster to Barrow, the reservation had already been removed as someone previously failed to sit there.
