ok.

Selby to Kings cross on 24/1/13 at 11.05 is advance £10 or £6.60 with a railcard, but when i select 2 adults one with a railcard i expect the fare to be £16.60 but it says £29.90!

Why am i being charged more, naturally i could order 2 separate tickets but then seat reservations wont be next to each other. Am i being thick or is this just stupid or a software problem?

Advance fares are only sold in limited numbers, so there's probably only one £10 advance fare remaining.

quite a few trains around these days that only have one ticket remaining then, i find this quite unlikely...

I think that's the most likely explanation.

Booking engines will put all passengers into the same ticket type - so if there's say one £10 Advance and five £18 Advances, asking for two passengers will give a total of £36 as both will be put on the £18 fare, leaving the £10 unsold. If you book one person on the £10 and the other seperately on the £18 (£11.90 Railcard) you'll get the best discount (use the Railcard on the more expensive fare as you'll make more of the discount). You won't get reservations together but there's no reason you can't sit together - I don't imagine this service is especially busy.

Actually, on EC's website you can now choose the seats that you want to reserve so as long as you click the "view my reservation" option and amend one of them (or both) so that you're sitting with each other, you'll be golden.

Yes, but the 11.05 is a Hull Trains service, and EC only let you change seat reservations on their own trains.
